Blank Spots

Hey guys, Have a quick question about paint not sticking to certain areas. An example would be trying to paint a large gem and the paint lays down fine on the edges but the center doesn\'t stick for some reason. I clean the mini\'s and prime with Citadel spray paint before I start, but I keep running into the this phenomenon.

The worse part is that I keep laying paint to try to cover these bad spots but it just runs around it causing more paint to build up in the areas that were already taking paint to begin with. I have my painted thinned, but not to the point where it should run everywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmmmm... some possibilities;

After priming, was the centre of the gem touched at all? Did it perhaps pick up some oil that would prevent adhesion? It\'s always a good idea to never touch the mini once it\'s been primed.

Is the paint perhaps being drawn to the edges of the jewel by capillary action? If you paint just the centre of the jewel, perhaps the paint will stick without being drawn away.

And welcome, Pogue.

Plastic mini or metal?

Plastic minis have some waxy stuffs they use as mold releases. It could have floated up through the oil based primer and be on the gem.

But, odds are, you have touched it and got oils from your fingers on the mini - as Mod said. Try giving the mini a soapy water bath, lightly rub with a paper towel, clear water rinse and let dry well and see if that helps.

Is your paint too thin? a thin wash will fall off a high surface down into the recesses?

Finally, try a different primer. I am no fan of citidel spray stuff.

Thanks for the good advise guys. It must have come from inadvertently touching it :redface: .
It is a resin model as far as the material on this particular one. It has happened a few times with plastic but never metal. I will have to be more careful in the future, thanks guys.

Sometimes resin models need to be cleaned with dish washing liquid or something to remove a film of release agent (or whatever it is) before priming. Some resin models, from Ilyad for instance, can be primed without doing this. But try washing it and then reprime it.

Warm water, washing up liquid and a 15p pack of Wilkinsons toothbrushes will be a great help in getting rid of left over mould release and grease.
