Blacklining on Ultramrines armor?

I was doing a diorama, and wanted to blackline Ultra armor, but no black paint, so, I tried shading w/ Blue Ink, and painting Ultra-blue over this. I will have pics soon, but what do yup think? I think it looks good???

I think this is actually a quick GW method which is in the painting guide - but I don\'t have it handy.

If you think it looks good - that\'s all that matters :)

The only issue with black lining with ink is the glossy look it can give your shadows. Will disappear with a matt varnish

Normally a pen works best with blacklining (both types) as it is much easier to work with. Also are you talking about the technique where you put dark lines in to show shadows or the one where you use it as a blatant border between armour plates. I have done marines with a pen and the first technique and it worked out well but you might need to put a drybrush on afterwards to make it less blatantly pen as the pen is rather glossy.

Gah!!!

Using pens on figures is just wrong!!!!

Undercoat black, then just basecoat leaving the undercoat showing where you want blacklining or extreme shadow. Easy.

And you can even apply a very thin layer of your shading colour over this black line to make it slightly less black and more natural looking.

lol I have a much simpler solution.

Watered down black paint...yes you heard me. It acts like a wash, isn\'t gloss, and seems a lot more natural.

you need to experiment with the ratio, I couldn\'t say, I just go with my feeling.

What are you black lining first?

If you are doing it on the armour then don\'t.....use a very dark blue instead.

If you are blacklining around other objects then carry on, but i\'d use black not anyother colour.

I agree here. I like to thin Midnight Blue and paint it over all the armor for Ultramarines.
