My future brother-in-law asked me to paint a mini for him. Here she is. I\'ve only painted the base colors at this point.

I am going to paint some washes in the crevases next, but I\'ve hit a bit of a block on the color(s) I should use. I was planning on using a blue/ black wash but I wasn\'t sure how that would come out against the skin tone.

Any ideas, comments, etc are greatly appreciated!

I wouldn\'t recommend doing a base wash over all the mini. Use different controlled washes over various parts of the mini.

A light brown/chestnut wash over the skin.

A Blue black wash for the lower cloth.

A dark grey wash for the upper cloth.

And a dark brown wash for the hair.

When applying the washes I would water them down quite a bit, this\'ll give you more control over the tone.

Don\'t overflow the brush otherwise it\'s just going to pool and run into the other colours.

For future reference concentrate on getting one area finished, when painting a base colour on every area, you\'re running the risk over getting paint over others when applying the next stage.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice on the washes. I\'ll give going section by section a go on the next mini I attempt. I mostly worry that I\'ll paint my most perfect skin ever and then whoops all over it.

I used to paint all the basecoat colours first and have just started doing section by section, think it keeps you inspired when you see each part come to life but have had some horrible shaky habd moments, black blob on finished face the worst!!!

The most important lesson I\'ve learned (actually still trying to learn  ) about washes is to apply them a little at a time. You can always add more layers but you can\'t take them away when you\'ve overdone them

I was planning on using Austin Powers as my inspiration!

Really, though, I\'m thinking silver at this point, but we\'ll see. I should have some more pics up tomorrow. I\'ve been slacking on the painting this week, so all I\'ve got done right now is a wash on her skin.

I\'ve got her skin done. I\'m happy with how it came out. It\'s a little chaulky looking in person, but I\'m pretty sure that\'s because I didn\'t let one of the layers dry before I moved on to the next one. Whoops, wont do that again :duh:

Her arms were really funky to paint. It\'s like she has big pancakes in place of forearms. I tried to paint on some muscle tone, and I think it came out ok.

Looking good........never really experienced chalky paint, so don\'t know how to help with that.

You\'re gonna have to pick out the eyes in this mini the gaps are to large to miss, before you do, put a darker shade of brown into them first.

I\'d use a little of the flesh wash with a tiny touch of dark brown. Keep it liquidy, dab the brush in and virtually remove all the paint from it, and apply it to the eye sockets.

I was planning on making her look a little more angry, and I definitley think a darker wash around her eyes will do the trick. I just got done cleaning up some of the skin color from her skirt (if you can call it a skirt), so I\'ll go darken up her eyes while that dries.

I\'m going to figure out how to light my pictures properly one of these days!

Her left eye looks like I let a little smidge of the brown get away from me. I didn\'t see it until I took the photo. I\'m planning on doing a wash on her skirt to tone down those highlights a bit, and then re-painting some of the midtones to bring them out. I\'m waiting until tomorrow because my eyes are suffering from painting/ computer fatigue.

I just looked at my pic again, and her left eye looks larger than the right. Hmmm, she\'s making crazy eyes! Again, will inspect tomorrow when I am not half blind.

I don\'t necessarily think that crazy eyes is a bad thing here! The wide sort of stare fits the mood of the model for me.

It\'s coming on quite well now, but one thing that doesn\'t look right is on the first pic in your last post. Under her arms there seem to be really dark and quite defined lines.

The back of the cloth looks really good if you ask me. The quite stark highlights give it a sort of silk like appearance. The front works less well. The big light highlights at the top feel too big and slightly misplaced.

The fact that every time I look at the black thing on her chest I think it is a big load of bushy chest hairs isn\'t currently helping enhance her femininity though! lol

Wow, quick post. I just left the page, came back, and poof!

The dark line you see is me over-spreading my skin wash. No, wait, it\'s all the sweat from her chest hair spreading along her arms! That\'ll be fixed up once I work on her cape a bit and give her a shave.

The highlights on the top of the skirt are the one\'s that I wanted to tone down. I thought they made sense because that\'s where her thighs are, but really they are out of place. It\'s more like the fabric is between her legs and not on them, so the lighter highlights should not be there.

you could use darker shades in the skin and the blue robe

the highlights can be that bright, they just need to flow properly, what i mean is, light doesnt cover the robe evenly, it will be darker and brighter in places, so as the fold goes up or down or out to the side, light will go from darker to brighter, or brighter to darker, right now your highlights are quite even, not enough range

also darkening some of the shadows a bit will give the pop you will want

i myself need to touch up my robe on my latest, as i dont follow my own advice!

She\'s pretty much done except for her base.

@ Iono and Manus: As you can see, she\'s added a lovely chest plate to hide her \"hair problem\". Nair just wouldn\'t do the trick!

I really need to practice more on my metals, but they do look less messy and a bit more shaded in person. Better lighting for my pics will help that issue. I\'m planning on finishing her base after dinner so I may have another update this evening. I\'m going to toss some static grass on her base. I\'ve never used it other than the practice base that I tried it out on earlier today, so it should be interesting.
