Basing Tau armour

Mouth of Sauron

Yesterday I bought a Devilfish tank, but I started painting a drone first ( just to test it )

I basecoated it black and after that I painted a layer Scorched Brown on it. I want to have the GW gallery sheme on my tank, so after the Scorched Brown I painted Vomit Brown on it, but this takes an awfull lot of layers to get smooth.

Would it take less layers if I based the drones / Devilfish with Skull White and then blackline the lines of the models?

Thanks,

Niels

Scorched brown is VERY dark

Vomit brown is VERY light, almost yellow.

I would maybe basecoat with Beast or Snakebite instead of scorched brown. A couple of thin layers is better tha one thick one!!

To get panel lines, cheat! Use inks!!

My choice would be to basecoat white, and then wash the model with brown ink. donga got it right; don\'t base the panels with scorched brown. Bestial brown first, then snakebite leather. Snakebite leather has poorer coverage, and can be patchy even over white, nigh impossible over black. Vomit brown will work very well over snakebite leather.

I should try that grey primer some time, but I\'m too used to washing over white now.

Okey dokey here\'s what we did....We had to paint 3000 points of Tau in 3 weeks for games day. They had to match the studio colours as the studio army was involved in the game....

Undercoat skull white....
Basecoat thinned Vomit brown (around 1 part paint to two parts water) with 1 part vermin brown added.
After leaving to dry paint the vomit brown on..(thinning it a little actually gives a lot smoother finish and it covers a lot easier.)
Took around 3 coats making sure each coat was toally dry before applying the next.)
Highlight by adding aa little bleached bone into the vomit brown.
For the reddy colours 50/50 mix Scorched brown and red gore highlighted by adding bleached bone.
On the warriors make a glaze of 1 prt scorched brown 8 parts clean water and a spot of washing up liquid and paint around 4 layers on the undergarments straight over white undercoat before starting the armour then paint the armour as above....

Hope that helps ....

Oh yeah......I\'ve got a bit of a reputation for painting large amounts of minis very quickly to a good standard ( it even mentions it in WDUK 30th bday edition.....)

This has happened mainly through working fr GW and doing large armies for display and GD participation games..and also through doing commission work..(recently did a commission of 100 ultra marines terminators.

t\'s all good fun really but I am now taking more time and enjoying painting to display level again although I do still sometimes get a little frustrated....
