all depends

what you\'re aiming for and how high you want to build it up. As a basic tip, try using light-weight materials: bits of foam, plywood, cardboard, even papier mache. Then cover it with a light coating of filler mixed with white glue.

The traditional stuff for rough groundwork is \"spackle\" - plaster filler, sometimes with stuff mixed into it to give texture - but everybody uses their version. Two part car body filler was my favorite for a while but it\'s expensive for big jobs.

For stones etc: a good tip is to use the fine dirt that collects along the edges of roads in the gulleys - it\'s usually around the right scale.

Hope that helps

For my Dios I like to be able to remove the fig. Therefore, I use some foamboard about the thickness of a base so it looks somewhat even. The tricky part is getting the base to match the dio. I found that if you stick it in and pasint around it, you can take it out and do the rest of the base not seen when on the diorama.

For my diorama materials, I like to use miliput because I can shape it into good looking piecies, but only if it\'s somewhat large. Sometimes I\'ll even use bigger foam peices for big areas such as a hill or rock, but this is fragile sometimes (as my mother knocking into it made me find out).
