basing bikes

Evening All,

I\'m hoping to start a White Scars army for 40k, however I don\'t like the cavalry bases they are supplied with, n don\'t want to use titan/monster bases as they are too big for gaming considerations (this is going to be a tournament army) so was wondering if anyone knew where i could get longer cavalry type bases - or if anyone can make them for me (for a premium of course!).

If anyone can help could you pm me rather than just reply to this as I rarely use the forum.

Of course, any tips for painting white would be appreciated too!

You could always try what some other people have done and cut a one inch round base in half and attach a half of it to the front and back (narrower ends) of the cavalry base.

GW sells the regimental bases, one of them is 25x100 mm I think, the cavalry bases are 25x50 right? You could also try basing 2 bikes on a 50mm square or 60mm round base perhaps too? Not sure what you don\'t like about the bases or why you\'d want larger ones, as you stated, that\'s bad in game terms. Perhaps, a good idea, might be to base the bikes on the regular bases but make a movement tray for them, with the added extended size for the detail you\'d like to use, that way, it wont affect the game as you can still measure from/to the base.

I know there\'s a couple retailers that sell various bases, Dragon Forge Designs has some nice ones, there\'s many others, I forget the names off the top of my head, many post here regularily, I only remember DFD because I was checking out the store just yesterday or the day before.

Essentially I find the cavalry bases too short - I would like more detail to be visible on the base, I don\'t like the rounded ends, and I don\'t want to use the largest round bases - as I stated in my initial post becuase of their implications in gaming terms - Thanks fro the suggestion re regimental bases and some of the suppliers - I\'ll look into it.

Oh, now I gotcha. Yeah, I never really thought about that, the bikes do cover most of the base and since they\'re so low to the ground, you can\'t see anythng under the bike. Unlike a horse, wolf, cold one or whatever, where you can still see at least %75 of the base from almost any side angle even if they have all 4 feet on the ground.

Is there a GW like base retailer somewhere? I assume there must be but the google search yeilds a few too many results to sort through. I want to get a bunch of bases for different things, but I want the closed bases, which for some reason, must not sell since GW never puts them in the cheaper bags of bases and now that you can\'t order them by the sprue, you can\'t even get the closed 20 or 25mm bases, at least not from the online store that I can find. Maybe if I call mail order...I really regret not getting them 2 or 3 years ago when I first wanted to. :cussing:

so you are looking for squared or non-rounded bases that are just longer than the standard bike bases?

Litko tend to be able to cut you any size base you could want be it round, square, rectangle, pill or hex.

The best bit is they have a lovely burnt wood smell :D

Linkto seems like a pretty cool company.

GF9 does pretty much the same thing. I don\'t know which you\'d like better, but Linkto seems to have bulk order as an option, which would save money.

After looking more closely, I think Linkto movement trays are cheaper, but the magnetic basing thing (which is amazing btw) looks cheaper on GF9.

This set is kinda ugly, but it looks like you can order a ton of bike bases on the cheap. You can do the same for round or rectangle bases. Just click the Econo link on the left.

I was gonna chime in with a Litko suggestion but I was beaten to it (though I guess I\'m still chiming in).

I must say I love their bases, simple, inexpensive, and they work. I\'ve started replacing GW plastic bases with theirs because the consistency of size is right on (Litko\'s are that is, GW doesn\'t quite grab the concept of consistency).

Dunno if you\'ve tried to google \"linkto\" or \"linkto movement trays\" but uh...yeah, not fun. How about a link to the site? Purty please with sugar on top.

GF9 has some pretty cool deals on bases and trays though, I might have to pick some of those up. I forgot about all their markers and stuff too, which I\'m also pondering.

It\'s LITKO and There\'s a link on my last post ;)

They do some pretty cool markers for just about everything. I did an order last Easter and I got a free bag of yellow chicken markers for characters who refuse challenges or units that run away bawk bawk bawk lol

Did I also mention that I love the burnt wood smell...

Again, thanks for all your help - I think i\'m going to have to go with GF9 - not only are their boxes of bases cheaper, they also have cool basing materials that I can never find in the UK....

I have already bought achunk of bikes and white scars torsos, so I think the bases will be purchased soon!

One of the things i like using for basing are pieces of old ceiling tiles for drop ceilings, when you tear em up a little bit they look like giant rock/ boulders, my bikes are based with the ceiling tile torn up to look like giant pieces of Slate, my ravenwing captain is just glued on the back tire and looks like he is about to ramp off of the rock... thats what i do.. hope it helps you out!
