Base slate rock?

Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction to getting what is I assume is slate (like the roofing tiles). This is a perfect example:

Either pre-broken (hobby store?), or would a whole tile (builders merchant?) break up into 25mm base size pieces with say, a hammer?

Thanks!

I don\'t know what Country you\'re in but Jewson or Wickes in the UK stock slates.
For the tiny amount you need you could probably get a broken piece for free.

You can make rocks from epoxy putty of course but I think it\'s much easier to cheat and use real rock or slate and paint it - real rock doesn\'t look like real rock in miniature!

Just to annoy you I\'ll mention that I live next door to a church that is being renovated and there\'s about 4 tons of broken slate / :D

honestly,,,,one piece of slate for roofing will last you a longggggg time. Its not the easiest thing to smash with a hammer, but a couple of good whacks (make sure its in a bag or wrapped in newspaper) will do the job. I normally keep an eye out for builders doing roofs,,they normally have a few broken pieces that they are happy to give away (skips too, although its illegal i think).

I\'m looking to use it for a whole army, so a few tiles will probably do. I live in New York City and will take a wander tonight, as there\'s loads of building work going on around here.

have a look around your neighbourhood. someone is bound to be doing some work on their house. any skips outside will have a few old slates in them. dont worry about a hammer, just drop it and you should get a nice variety of size pieces

I got mine off the neighbours roof.... er did I say neigbours roof?

Actually I did but in my defence there was no one living there and they were all pretty much falling off anyway.

GW occasionally come out with an \"Urban Basing Kit\" but it always seems to be in limited supply. Failing that you could try garden centres.
