Barbarian Green Stuff Work In Progress

Hello boys & girls!

this is my first scratch built sculpt and i want to share my progress on it and i want to hear your opinions about my sculpt.
Its not finished yet but will hopefully be soon. ^^ its gonna be a Muscle Mountain Barbarian inspired by this artwork by a guy called VegasMike over at DeviantArt.

progress_01.jpg

Heres the first stage of it. not much to look at.

progress_02.jpg

Now we\'re getting somewhere, the boots and legs are finished, the boots we\'re a Blast to sculpt. And i\'ve begun to flesh out the neck and shoulder area. ^^

progress_03.jpg

Here ive started to flesh out the left arm and given him a sixpack to flex with. the neck muscle will be redone cuz it looks nothing like a muscle in this stage, more like some weird tyranid bit or something. not even that.

progress_04.jpg

now we\'re closing in. Hes got some Loincloth to cover his manhood with now! i have also done some man boobs, roughly sculpted the left arm and hand (the hand was a real pain in the ass to sculpt since i\'ve covered it with GS in previous stages, making the hand bulky and it looks weird). and ive given him a new neck. It might look unrealistic but ive used bodybuilders on steriods for reference and one of them looked like that (serously). plus i think it fits the character =P

progress_05.jpg

Now ive given him a Right Arm too. though its bigger than the Left one, i will have to do somehting about it. And hes got a head! i suck at sculpting heads and i wanted to save some GS so i cheated a little and gave him a skull as head, im gonna have to do something about that back. it looks too messy.

progress_06.jpg

ive lowered his right arm and given him a hood. that was a real bitch to sculpt. i have finaly fleshed out his left arm so it now matches the right one a bit more. i have also begun to smooth out the back. i will add eyes at some stage so it wont look too skull like. i think i will make his lower back a bit broader, just a little cuz it looks kinda weird as it is now.

progress_07.jpg

ive made a stamp for the heads that the barbarian is gonna hold in his left hand by the hair, its made from a skull and a zombie from GW. i have also done the axe that i will attach once its finished. i have noticed how hard it is to sculpt weapons with Green stuff now, i dont have any plasticard so i have to take what i have. but i have found a technique that fits my purpose when it comes to sculpting the Axe Head. I make a roughly shaped axehead and then i scrape and carve it so it will resemble Stone or Cold hammered iron but it doesnt show very well in this picture, plus ive not come to that stage in the process yet, it needs to cure first. i will probably post a close up pic of it once its done. This is the third time ive Redone that axe. First time the axe head was too small and there were leather straps that was too thick so i removed them completley. the axe is about as high as the barbarian, pretty big. ^^
The rope wasn\'t too fun to sculpt either, it got kinda messed up.
If anyone have a good tip on how to sculpt rope they are most welcome!

The sculpt is about 50mm, but i plan on using him as a Chaos Lord or such for our path to Glory games. He will probably be a Khorne champion, i might explain his size with him being gifted with enourmous strength by his gods or something. he should still be able to fit on a 2,5cm square base though.

If you have any suggestions or comments they are most welcome!

Nordic out.

looks good. have you tried other putties? i would use a gs/milliput, straight milliput, magic sculp or apoxie sculpt to do the axe head. you can get nice sharper edge

also, bear in mind that the latissimus dorsi inserts into the pelvis, so i would bring some of the bulk down a little:

Very \'Heavy Metal\'ish. I think that I like it.

Not sure if the legs look in the right proportion to the body, and it doesn\'t look like he has a pelvis. But oh well looking good.

thank you for your input!
unfortunatley i havent tried any other sculpting material other than Super sculpey and green Stuff. i would very much like to try Brown stuff though. do you know any good sites where i can order from?

on the axe topic, i will make it will look sharper once the GS has cured, i will Carve it so it will look like its made out of Stone or cold forged metal. its the best solution i have Atm.

thanx for providing that pic! i could really have some use of it! i will probably bring down the bulk a little as you said.

maybe its a little Man\'o\'war-ish? =P

thanx for the input!
I havent noticed that really, but now that you point it out i see it. do you have any suggestions on how i can correct it without too much problem? i hoped that the loincloth would hide it but i guess that i was wrong. oh, well, its my first mini after all. you cant get everything right the first time. =)

A+B is a hard setting putty, you can also mix it with GS, which works great for fabric/cloth items
I get it from Sylmasta

wooohoo! thanx man. ive been looking for GS on a stick!:bouncy:

EDIT: crap i couldnt order from that site... since i live in sweden and my Maestro Card wont work there...

mickc22

Granddad!
do you have the pre-pay visa cards over there?
I got one from Paypal I can top it up from my paypal account or at the post office, it\'s just like a normal Visa, but you can only spend what you put on it

nuh, i have a Maestro Card and it needs a Issue Number that only the UK have. ive tried my best at ordering some GS and Brown stuff from that site but no success. i need to get a Visa or MasterCard. sweden sux cuz you cant get any Brown stuff here that i know of. nor any GS in those 90cm bigpacks or tubes either. just the ones from GW.

i would highly recommend magic sculp and also milliput.

looking at him again, i spent so much time looking for lat pics, i forgot to mention his tapezius. it seem s a little bulky, makes him look more like a hunchback! i would whittle it down a little

his traps look like growths...if you want the brock lesnar shoulders, you need to bulk up the upper back more, and tone down the rounded-ness of them

as for the lats, they just need a bit more of an extention towards the lower back..otherwise they arent too bad

you are however missing the oblique and anterior muscles(side abbs)

and please, when sculpting big hulky men, remember LEGS GET BIGGER FASTER since they carry all the weight, unless of course he is the type to go to a gym and have no idea what he is doing, and thus only does bench press and upper back...in whichcase ignore this statement

Update! ive worked a little on this guy now and i have tried to improve the things that you guys pointed out.

@Mickc22: i made a Paypal account. but it was too much fuss to tranfer money and such. ill just get a Visa card instead. i\'ll need one anyway. but thanx for the Help=)

@starks333: about the legs. im not sure i can do so much more to them, i will have to redo the whole legs but ive done a little on what i can improve. i might try some more to the inner side of the legs. that might bulk them out a little if thats what you mean.
Or he might just be one of those who go to the Gym and just got no idea what hes doing =P

@freakinacage: I Realised that his tapetzius looked like balloons too. so i removed them and redid them. hopefully he will look less like a hunchback. but i still want him to look a little hunched.

progress_08.jpg

i have bulked out the latissimus dorsi so it now sticks to his pelvic. and ive added some side abs. The tapetzius muscle is toned down now but still a little uneven. ill need to fix that.

thanx for your input guys! =)

Ace, we should work together to cast him up. Of course you would need to cove the GW parts with your own sculpting so we do not reproduce their things. I like what I see.

It\'s close for sure but that could pass I\'m sure. Anyway, just an invitation if you ever feel like doing some minis. I have a very good set up, almost like a guild for sculptors right now. I fund the molding, as I make them, and help them sell their work on my site with a royalty system. As far as I know I\'m the only one doing this for up and coming artists. I think it\'s going to allow a lot of talented people to get a chance they might have never got so I feel proud of them all. Just keep my in mind. Sig has my site and you can reach the forum community from there.

thanx for the invitation, its a really great idea. the models should remain unpainted if you will cast them right?
im already a member there, i signed up a few days ago, i call myself nordic there, though i havent posted there yet. should i add this Wip there as well?

Unpainted is better, yes. Add whatever you want, I\'m open there and you might get some good feedback from others. Wormwood in particular is very good with anatomy.

there, now i have added the axe. i had to resculpt the biceps and lower arm to be able to attach the axe so it will look belivable. the axe is insanley big. just the way its supposed to be ^^ i hope my rig will hold until its cured. i will work alot more on the arm, i need to make fingers and stuff. its far from finished. and i have made a face. i added a lower lip, nose and eyes. now i think it has qiute a sad look on its face, maybe too sad. though i think it looks kinda like hes more a force of nature with that serene face or something. like the Barbarians in D&D, one with nature and stuff.

I have decided i wont have those heads in his right hand as it will probably look too unbalanced and weird. so now i have spare heads. yay!

i have started to think of what mini i should do next, and im considering to do a female barbarian. or a wizard, overall it will probably be a female sculpt. i have never sculpted anything remotley female before. i will probalby use the Diablo III concept art as reference for those sculpts since they are soo awesome. either that or a Skaven Assassin maybe ^^ that would be cool too
