This is a barbarian I have been making an effort to paint ,seems monochromatic to me but I am not sure.
Lil man and I think the intellect of a barb would not be lots of bright colors but I believe the skirt skins may be to common of a chord.
The gloss is only magic mix and will be corrected with Matt when finished

Think greens and other colors of nature. If you use reds you should use a very black heavy red. But, I think greens with a tan skin tone would look good.
By the way what figure is this? I like it alot

airhead

Coffin Dodger / Keymaster
Barbarians also think \"shiney\" Don\'t believe me? go to the fishing isle. Those lures don\'t have to catch fish, just fishermen.

I think the skirt is too close to the skin tones and gets lost. Looking at his chainmail, maybe it was once a brightly colored leather skirt, but now is dingy and faded?

very cool...

Yeah, I think a naturalistic approach would seem to fit the character more.

Lots of browns/ivory/yellow...

Maybe a bright color in the guise of facial warpiant?

I want one of those guys too!

Someone mentioned green and I have used Vallejo\'s Yellow Green with a dark brown for shading with good result on a barbarian-ish mini that I\'m laying the finishing touches on at the moment. It works well with tanned skin, leather and other brownish colours.

Heh...being \'devil\'s advocate\'...

IMO..barbarians weren\'t into camouflage or muted colours at all. They didn\'t try and creep up on folk too much if my history serves me correct.

Also, don\'t forget that we take dyes for granted now. In the past they were a symbol of power and wealth....

To my mind, a barbarian would be as functional as he/she needed to be, but also might demonstrate their power/fearlessness by having at least one item that was quite colourful. I don\'t imagine they would want to be accused of hiding..:D

*EDIT* looking back at the mini...the boots and glove would be functional, as would the armour, but I can imagine him in a patchwork short kilt...not too lurid, but enough to suggest power/skill..how about different types of fur/pelt.

Easier said than realised of course...

I thought of fur but I do not know if my talents would hold up with out the texture there.
I had not thought of the color/wealth thing good point Finn. I will add color to the skirt (did not paint last night to busy with the ebay listing thing:() I agree with airhead though since the mail skirt is tattered the skirt would probably not be new.
I will look for flat painted foo fur in the painted gallery.
I had looked at
Barbarian
And decided that I will be 80 and half dead before such an accomplishment.
But the dark scheme came from this work.

Nice to hear!

My opinion on the WIP so far is that I think it looks very good, but the kilt is probably too close to the skin tone as is, but perhaps after shading and highlighting are all finished that may change. Personally, the first thing I thought when I saw the patchwork nature of the kilt was that he had sewn together pieces of the flesh of slain enemies (but then I have been known to create thick layers of dripping blood on axes, so maybe that\'s just me :)).

Finn has very good points about historical barbarians, so keep those in mind if that is the character you are trying to capture here. I usually think more in terms of the heroic fantasy barbarian - realism out the window, he does what he wants and accomplishes his goals through superhuman physical abilities.
