Bad Fairy + rant

below is the link to my version of the freebooter bad fairy.

Let me know what you think.

As a side note, I watch the scores on CMON pretty closely, has anyone ever noticed that sometimes a batch is approved and gets voted on very harshly by the first few people who see it. While other times a batch gets approved and gets a kinder group of initial lookers.
I dont know if anyone watches that close but when there are only a few votes on a mini you can really see the impact of a few more pessimistic people.

As examples recently I have seen a few minis get approved and drop to crazy bad numbers. I was appalled at how low some of the scores were. I know standards improve over time but this
http://www.coolminiornot.com/212976
was getting a 7.1 or so when he submitted it the first time (it looks like he resubmited with different photos) , thats just people not looking very hard.
This was similarly low scoring, altho the pic is lacking (the ebay link has much better pics), the smoothness and crispness make a low 7 a joke
http://www.coolminiornot.com/212907

I know standards improve over time but honestly these things are both way better than what I paint and I can pick up a low 7 on a good day. and should be more than 2 points removed from tabletop quality.

I agree with you, but you also have to consider the fact that this is \"coolMINIornot\" not \"coolPAINTJOBornot.\" So it\'s not only the paint job that\'s consider by those voting but also that fact whether they like the mini itself.

Okay, here goes....

Your mini- Loved it. 8. the highlights are great and smooth. Look\'s realistic (Like all the winged fairy\'s I know!) and it was an easy 8.

Conan- I don\'t like it that much. I gave it a 7 beacause it is skillfully painted, for sure, but I don\'t like the color choices and the hair just doesn\'t do it for me. It need to be closer to blcak for my tastes to seperate it from the rest of the model and help draw me into the face and such. I think.

The elf fig. 7.5 (scored an 8) beacause it looks pretty good, but why is the pic so small? MY mini\'s look good at that size, this one should be a bigger pics with close ups to show off the paint job.

Your mini is well painted, great photo, with a nice tight close up. Easily I ranked yours tops. Just thought I\'d give you an opinion from someone who voted those mini\'s at 7\'s. Also 7 isn\'t an awful score from me.

Great work on your submission!

I love that mini! Really one I need to get someday.
Nice paintjob, my only crit is the darklining is a bit harsh/thick at places, and the skin could use a bit more contrast.

As for the scoring, well, the system is FUBAR and will probably never be reliable again; only things that are certain is that the top painters will get 9+, the slightest mistakes will throw the commoners mini in the low 6, and a mini that is less good than yours will get higher score cauze it\'s the flavor of the month .. I guess if you\'re really productive, once in a while, a mini will get a deserved score, which will probably be a random occurrence.

The two examples are lacking in contrast, rubbish sculpts and the photos are crap! I\'d vote no higher than a 7 for either of them.

They\'re both getting high 7s, which means more people are voting 8 than 7. Anyone voting a 9 on either of these pieces would want to go and get either their eyes or brain tested! Seems that the voting is working pretty well to me.

Here. http://www.coolminiornot.com/212106 that gets a 6.

This graph is generally true, from what I see.
CMONgraph.jpg

A=People like yellowone
A2= People like aliengod3
B= Myself... ok, maybe a bit inflated ;)
F= a persons First mini

P.S. The letters have nothing to do with A-F grades, it just happened that way.

If you aren\'t a nationally known painter, you have to assume a full point of deviation in your score.

However, the DarkElf piece is a Jenn Haley piece, but considering she has fallen quite out of favor the past few years, accounting for the lower scores given the quality of the paintjob.

Basically, if you are an unknown and can post model consistently over an 8 you are really doing well and it\'s time to start putting yourself out there in the competition world. If not, keep practicing and working to improve.
:)
Please keep in mind, none of this is a reflection on your abilities CELPainting, as I think your fairy is a really nice piece of work. I think the wings are keeping it out of the 8+ range.

I can\'t keep up with all this technical mumbo jumbo. Thanks for making me feel stupid chaos877! Mini painting has evolved past the point where the common man can take part in discussion about painting, what with all the graph charting involved nowadays!

I\'m off to kill some Super mutants in the wasteland...

a score based on name alone?!?!?! NOOOO

anyway, hey great mini i gave it an 8. I really like the subtle ummmm.....latte? LOL skin tone.. it works really well with this subject. The painting is tight and the colors are great... hell even the photograph is good. the only reason i didnt go higher is i would like to see a bit more contrast of highlight and shadow in the skin tone.. but thats not to say i think you did it wrong, i just prefer a bit more highlights and shadows in the skin. VERY nice and congratz on a great display piece.. where can i get this little chica?

It\'s a freebooter mini, you can order on the cmon shop... they have a lot of minis with... errr... nice skintones oportunities :D

A Luna

A Lunatic
I kinda had the same. 1 miniature of me had a 6.7 and when I re-submitted it with ebay auction it ended up with a 7.3:\\
0.6 points higher which is odd for me...

I appreciate all the comments and kind words. I especialy like the graph, that seems spot on with my thinking on how the scoring around here goes. The range of skill you can get in the 5-8 range is simply to much.

A Luna you are right on my original idea I was trying to get across, which is that almost all minis i have watched closely drop like a rock in their first 10-20 votes then go up steadily after that.
Basically I am wondering why all the haters are faster to vote than the lovers?

I wonder if that first vote is a 10 a lot of the times if folks see that and think to themselves \"A 10?!?!? oh no way... il fix this little problem/1 umm lets see... 6! that oughtta balence things out... oknext mini\" then it just goes downhill from there.

I\'m gonna \'fess up and say that I do this exact thingy. I rate mine between 6-8, so when I see someone that I rate of a comparable skill level and I see a ten I get taken aback. Why not just wait and score yourself higher, if that\'s your thing?

So I defo do that. But on the flipside I often USED to see a model that I figured was WAY underscored (I\'m talking the figs that get 3\'s when they\'re defo not under tabletop standards) and I sometimes rate them a 10. But then I found that those votes get filtered if too far out of the norm so I quit that, as I wasn\'t helping the dude\'s score anyway. Now I try and comment.

Prehaps what time of day you submit might have something to do with it. Eg if i submitted late at night you peeps over the pond might vote higher than if i say submitted it in the morning, when all the people in the UK could vote first. Or vice versa..

It\'s really simple mathematics and I don\'t think has anything to do w/ snipers being faster than lovers ...

If you mini is averaging an 8 w/ 20 votes and somebody comes along and gives it a 1 ... it will drop to 7.7 a second 1 and it will be at 7.4.

On the other hand if it is at 8 w/ 20 votes and some lovers come along and give it 2 10s, it moves to 8.1 and then 8.2 ...

Because minis are all pretty much above a 5, a 10 will have less impact than a 1.

My theory .... clears throat ...

A lot of folks have their voting impacted by the score they see ... so, if you get sniped and the score drops ... say closer to a 7 than an 8 .. I think folks will tend to vote it a 7 rather than an 8. While the snipe votes will likely get cleansed out, you\'ve still taken a hit because of their impact on other voters.

Hang in there ... scores don\'t matter ... enjoy the painting ... enjoy the comments that others leave. If you aren\'t getting enough comments, go leave some yourself ... I\'ve found there\'s some kharma in comment leaving :)

I decided to leave that field blank on my first mini, so i gave myself a 6 DOH! but i think that you are not alone in doing that. what I do when i vote for minis is intentionally NOT look at the existing score cause i know for a fact, whether i want it to or not, the existing score will effect how i rate the mini. I try to not let it, but the more i try, the more it probably effects my score. therefore i dont look at the score at all while a rate a mini then look ater i have decided. I usually tend on the high side of a split up into the 9.somethings.. i give those 9\'s and I have only given out about 6 tens in the thousands of minis ive rated. ive given out a bunch of nines tho. I wonder if they could do something like this. If the person/voter sees the mini on the standard voting screen. the minis score is hidden from them until they select thier score. then the score will be revealed in that little side window to show you the last mini you voted on.

just a thought since we were on the subject.

Yeah I look at the score first. But I\'ve got my standards set pretty rigid in what I believe a 7 should be etc. So I see the score, and see how it rates to my standards. Probably backwards, but what can you do?
