Hi, first of apologies if this is on the wrong page, it's kind of an army list but more than that too. Also I know this is more of a modelling and painting site but I thought I'd try this anyway because everyone on here is so nice and friendly! *cheese*
I haven't played 40k in about 8 or 9 years, (the edition with the SM and DE in the box) and I'm thinking of starting up a little Fallen Angels army, mainly because I like their vibe. I was always more into the modelling and painting than the gaming aspect (because I could never get my head around all the rules), but I'd like to have something at least half-way playable.
I get the impression that the new CSM Codex leaves a lot to be desired, so I'm thinking of using the SM Codex and severly limiting my own choices (no plasma cannons, melta weapons, tanks). I'm on a bit of a budget but I've worked out that if I buy:
2 Dark Angel Veteran squads
1 Iron Hands squad (mmm bionics)
1 CSM squad (gonna cut off the spikes and horns)
1 Devestator squad...
And an HQ (either Cypher or Ezekiel model)
Then I will have enough models for:
1 retinue or veterans squad
2 tactical squads with special weapons
1 devestator squad with 2 lascannons and 2 rocket launchers
1 devestator squad with 3 heavy bolters (and will probably buy one more to make 4)
The mix of parts should give me a cool little group of robed, bionic-enhanced, dark looking characterful warriors. I've still got my bits box from back in the day so can customise with that too. The army could be expanded by adding some veterans, maybe a tech marine, maybe some bikes. But the purpose of this army is to be a small raiding force as befitting the Fallen Angel fluff.
So, questions:
Do I need to buy the rule book or could I just go down to a GW and have them teach me?
SM, DA, or CSM Codex- which do you think would be best?
Does this army seem to have any potential or would it get wiped out very easily?
Answers and any other comments would be greatly appreciated. Like I said I'm on a budget so I wanna get everything straightened out to avoid buying stuff I'm not gonna use.
Many thanks
John
