Back in the Game

After a couple of years away from the hobby, I have decided to start painting again. Unfortunately I recently gave away all my painting stuff, everything from models and paints to brush soap and drill bits (except my trusty hobby knife), so I have to start from scratch. Although it is a bit daunting (and expensive) it is also kind of nice to start from a clean slate.

Before I have almost exclusively painted Warhammer 40k miniatures (although I don’t play), but this time around I thought I would throw in a few other miniatures for the hell of it. There are so many nice ones out there and sometimes the grim darkness of the far future gets a little too… grim. For those reasons my first purchases has been a couple of boxes of Chaos Cultists for practice purposes and Steampunk Arielle by Guild of Harmony, which seems like a very nice model (and I’ve wanted to try my hands on “wet t-shirt” painting, which her dress seems perfect for). The cultists are on my shelf and Arielle is in the mail from Australia (I wonder what the delivery time is from Australia to Denmark).

I’ve put together a list of what I need to get a good start (feel free to remind me of stuff I have left out):
Vallejo Model Air Gray Primer
Vallejo Game Color Introduction Set
Milliput
Sand paper
Files
Brushes (2, 0, 00)
Brush cleaner
Brush soap

This should get me the tools to get a little practice. I don’t live near any good hobby stores so I buy all my stuff online, which means I usually buy in bulk to save on shipping. The best couple of online shops I have come across (fair prices and a good selection) are Battlefield Berlin and Wayland Games, but if you know of any other good ones in northern Europe let me know :)

And merry Christmas, by the way.

I can recommend Model Display Products.
Run by War Griffon, who used to be active on here, Good Stuff Great Service.

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
I'll second MDC. I live in Canada and was impressed with their prices, shipping and packaging.

I'm watching the Jeremie Bonamont Mini Painting DvD and I kinda feel like a fool for paying $25 for a wet pallet that can be made with a sealable plastic container, a paper towel, and wax paper. Most other basic stuff your may have around the house, but may need to stock up on x-acto blades and invest in a jeweler's saw or rotary tool.

I experimented with making my own wet palette the last time I painted and it is one of the first things I will make when I get some paint. I will probably go with one made in a CD cover unless I think of something better.

Drop me a PM with full name and address.
Let me know what kind of figs you like.
I would be happy to send some along to help re-boot your enjoyment of this great hobby.
Maybe a few paints and tools as well.
I own more than I need, certainly.

I'll pick up the postage to Denmark.

Happy New Year, buddy.

Do them vallejo model or game colors. Take care of finecast for 40K and oh, start gaming !

My first purchase was a Game Color Intro set with 16 colors and I have added a few bottles of GW paints since (no local seller of Vallejo). I have read a lot about the hobby in the last fortnight and among other things have learned to be vary of Finecast :)

Yes Finecast has a deserved reputation of being P**s poor.
Cheap material, GROSSLY overpriced and poor quality control.
I recently got given some Eldar Farseers and when painting the waist scarf on one an air bubble collapsed leaving a huge hole.
Bent swords and staffs all add up to high volume production, but low level quality control.

Too bad they can't make it work. I had my eye on some obliterators, but I guess I will have to be careful buying them (or find some old metal ones on ebay) :-(
