I was raking up the leaves from the big old oak tree yesterday, (in southern hemisphere obviously) and that got me thinking f a look i would like for my dwarven army. How do you think I would get a look for bases (and movement trays) that hints at fallen leaves?

several ways. Gather some of those leaves you're raking and crumble them and use the peices. You can also purchase Elm "leaves" from gaming stores. They are actually a scale that is part of the elm seads. They come died in various colors. I don't have pictures of them but you can find them on bases all them time.

There are a ton of products available that are basically little plant bits, mostly seeds. They look like autumn leaves. I don't know what brands or whatever are available in Australia. Some times it can be annoying trying to get these things shipped internationally because of laws on importing foreign plants/seeds. Customs agencies don't necessarily understand our little hobby. Snow flock = mysterious white powder, little baggies of static grass can look like like something you would want to light up and pass around, and yeah the little tiny seeds for ground scatter can violate laws for importing plants.

I tend to start with crush up dried herbs, then covered with paper leaves (1/48 scale) by PlusModel

thanks folks.

i wont be importing any vegetable materials to Australia any time soon. And I've no idea how you use a press mould - do you just mix up putty and squeeze it in, let it dry?
Think I'll start with real crushed up oak leaf.

I've done crushed leaves on a bases before... Use predominantly one color in an area, trying to make muti-colored leaves on the base just didn't work.

Don't use an ink wash to enhance the color... it soaks in and makes all the leaves one color.

Do use a matt varnish to seal it all up.

Of course if you are having troubles getting Birch Seeds, there are a few alternatives.
Raid the Kitchen for Dried Herbs and/or the contents of a Teabag or two. (Yes you can use dried out teabags as well.)
Ground between two spoons (Honest officer it's for model making), will break either down to look "In Scale".

Once given a touch of Dullcoate they'll last a Loooooooong time
