Somw good tips here. It's a bummer that your images didn't turn out - I suspect the articles function accepts "normal" HTML, not BBCode. BTW I would NOT recommend using Lego to build terrain - it's freakishly expensive compared to other materials! It can be used to form molds to cast other things though!

OMG This is awesome.
THANKY YOU THANKY YOU THANKY YOU

I Love to paint absolutely totally love it, the problem is, I live on a tight budget. I'm a man with a wife, & a kid, earning minimum wage ($5.25 where I'm at) so buying “the proper” tools just isn't possible a lot of times. This has given me a LOT of ways that I can finally do some nice looking terrain without destroying my finances.

Awesome article for the “budget artists” among us

You have some good suggestions. I use the cups from "crystal lite" lemonade mix for mixing or holding water. They are about 1/3 the size of a pudding cup. I also find old used-up phone cards or canceled credit cards are a good substitute for plasticard.

Some solid suggestions for a budget. I'd second the point about Legos being too expensive for regular brick-building, though. Even if you buy the basic brick sets in bulk, it's still not cost-effective.

A better way to build brick walls is with the same material used for so many other terrain pieces: pink insulation foam. You can get a huge plank of it at Home Depot for about $12, and that will last you a very, very long time. Just use a sharp hobby knife and a straightedge to cut it into bricks, and build a wall with PVA glue. Make sure you prime it by hand, though, as the propellants in most spray paints will melt foam.

Useful tips there.

By the way - I have found that covering polystyrene with a thin layer of standard filler will protect it from spraying. It also adds that weight and solidity.

You can also chip it off in parts once primed to make it appear like chipped plaster.
