Article: Raphael 8404 Vs. Winsor and Newton series 7

I think this was the most informative article on brushes I have read in a long time. I have been looking at new brushes of this quality for a while and know I have the information that I need I still need to know what the specific sizes I would need would be.

My own prefered brushes (even before Rapahel's) : Repique KOLINSKY ISABEY. I mostly use the Nr 2. Just great for blendings. Smaller ones are also perfect for details. You should try and compare

The Rahael's are the way to go! They are superior brushes to me because they fit my style. If you move paint around or manipulate paint on the mini loke blending and shading go with Raphael for the size and softness of the brush. If your stlye is laying down paint and building layers like a three color method without much movement of the paint go with the Winsor. In addition, if your brush strokes are long and slow go with the Raphael for the soft bristles. If your stroke is fast and is a flicking motion go with the Winsor for the snap in the tip. Of note, there is a quality issue with the Winsor-Newtons. Sometimes you will get a crapy brush, not so with the Raphaels.

Me too, Serie 7 is the best brush I ever used. Is around 3 - 4 year I am using him, and i never change anymore.

VERY useful! I have some in-expensive brushes and all my brush from the army painter range has hooked or worse. I will try Raphael brushes - the series 7 and 8404 seem to be good so I will go with the cheaper. Thanks for taking the time to help other painters.

I use the Esconda 1212 series and swear by it. They have very long bristles that come to a razor sharp point, i highly recommend that people at least look into them!

I grabbed myself a raph after using W+N for ages. Its nice, slightly better quality although you would only notice it if you have been painting for a while. I still prefer the W+N 7's bigger ferrule, more snap and the point is just as sharp. Once again tho unless your a fairly accomplished painter or you are looking to push yourself that bit further the change of brushes wont make that much difference, if you just paint TT then a GW brush will serve just as well, hell I won my 1st demon painting with just a GW detail and know other top painters who swear by them. Still great article!

Great Article! I would love to point out, however, that if you are a fan of the smaller 3/0 it would be fair to buy WNS7 size 000 for comparison, which is the smallest brush you can get.

Loved the article and all useful comments. I started with W&N Series 7 about two years ago, and I absolutely love them, but I've experienced the quality issue myself; one of the brushes has a defective tip that made it unusable. So, I will definitely shop for some Raphael´s, from the article and comments it seems the mist of glory surrounding W&N is dissipating a bit.
