Paints arrived yesterday, and I knocked this out today. Comments / opinions appreciated.

Some thoughts:

- Been over 30 years since I painted a mini.
- I didn't realize how much my eyesight has degraded.
- Figuring out the wet-palette thing. Wow! I wish I had these when I was 10.
- I didn't realize how important the photography aspect is. It looks better in person (lol, that's what everybody says...)

Thanks for looking!

Welcome back. Nice start. I'd like to see more definition on the metal with some washes or glazes. Some smoother blends on the pink and purple robes are needed, but the highlights are in the right places so you are off to a strong start! Contrast is your main weapon on everything. Push that and thin your paint for smoother transitions and you'll continue to improve :)

The camera does reveal some flaws, and made me notice the too-sharp contrast on the edge of the cloak (the highlight is too sharp of a line). Strangely though (moving left to right) the dark contrast in the first fold to the second highlight is exaggerated in the photo. The robe is also a little washed out in the picture...

This pic of the back is a little more representative of the transitions.

You're right about thinning the paint and working on the transitions a little more. On the robe, I worked from base to highlights to shades, and on the cloak I worked from base to shade to highlight. I think it's easier to start with the high points and lay in the shades...

I like where you are going with the metals, try not to let them pool so much at the tip of the blade there as you start to lose detail.

I like the reflections on the blade and i can see the shading on the clothes better here too.

Thanks Kretcher and Zap. My next project will be this dwarf.

Since he's covered in plate, I want to do something interesting with it. I'm thinking of blue steel (like Vallejo gunmetal blue), but I'm not sure how I want to go about it.

I'm thinking a base of black, gunmetal, and highlights through arctic blue to silver. I have all the vallejo model air metallic colors, and I like the consistency and metal flake better than the regular model color metallics (i.e.: the gunmetal blue). But the gunmetal blue is oh so dark... ;)

My other thought is black base, black metal, arctic blue and on up to silver. Haven't decided to lay a coat of black metal over the black, and highlight with the other colors (arctic being predominate) or a coat of arctic over plain black, and shade with black metal and highlight with the other colors.

I'd say you were pretty close to your goal then. It's looking great, thus far. I can't wait to see him all finished.

Also, you guys who completely finish one section before starting in another scare me. I just KNOW I'd end up splotching my perfect armour when I tried to do the face, or something...

Very nice. Check of Tommie's thread on taking nice photos without an elaborate set up. Push the contrast on the skull on the base a bit more, the eye and nose pits could be much darker :)

Actually, the photos aren't all that bad. BUT, here's an article I found on Dakka Dakka (is that kosher???) that is superb. It's basically how to spend no money, and get good photos of your minis out of your super cheap point-and-shoot or modern cell-phone camera.

Absolutely fine. Several of us belong to multiple forums and any knowledge gleaned from any source is helpful :)
