Alternatives to crappy GW plastic bases?

They\'re fine for minis painted to a normal tabletop gaming standard but they look very lackluster for minis painted to display standard or a high tabletop standard and I\'m wondering what I might use instead.

I\'m not sure what sizes they come in but the only thing I can think of so far is glass mosaic tiles; any other ideas?

Maybe you should look at what the higher ranking painters here do (http://www.coolminiornot.com/topartists) and then show us what you\'d like to go for.

As is, I\'m not quite sure if you\'re going for a tabletop++ effect or for a contest level base.

Concerning the glass mosaic tiles, I wouldn\'t use them :

*) tabletop : some tournaments might be picky and refuse them;
*) contest : I\'m not sure they\'d be of the best effect;
*) general reason : wouldn\'t they be a pain to pin/glue/... ?

I want to try selling some painted minis on eBay (I\'ve been buying them very cheap from eBay and from car-boot sales) for profit; they will probably be painted to \"high tabletop standard\" and I want them to stand out from the crowd as semi-display quality while still being usable as tabletop minis.

I could get around the pinning problem on glass my using a little milliput on the base and spiraling a piece of wire into it (embedding it) to give it strength, but like you said, a lot of people won\'t like glass bases and they would be no good for serious Tournament players.

dragonforge\'s stuff is great, but if you are looking for plain, try the warmachine style ones. you can do your own basing but they look a little nicer than the gw stuff

Bear in mind - if you\'re selling to \"high tabletop\" standrard, then the majority of your buyers will be wanting to use the figures for gaming - and as I understand it, GW don\'t allow their figures to be entered into official tournaments and the like with non-standard bases.

I\'m sure this won\'t be much of a problem anyway, but if you\'re selling, I\'d give an option for GW or non-GW basing.

I\'ve got a couple of Hasslefree bases and they look quite nice so I might buy a few more.

Another idea I have is to make the miniature removable so that the pin can be pulled out of it\'s display base and plugged into a gaming base but it\'s probably more complicated to do than it sounds.

Rather than being able to remove a figure from one base to be placed on another base, it\'s probably easier to put the miniature on a (nicely detailed) gaming base that then integrates itself into a larger display base while being detachable. Look up some old Golden Demon winners, especially in the unit categories, as many of them do this -- to get the best presentation and still meet the GW rule that the figures entered need to be playable.

*edit*
Here\'s the type of thing I\'m talking about, which angus147258 did to sell just the gaming/display base combo itself:

A gallery search for \"display base\" should also turn up a bunch of example results.

Just build an elevated base with walls round the mini and a little hole for him to poke his gun out of. Mobile 4+ cover save lol
