Almaran the Gold

Hello everyone; I\'ve posted minis on CMON before but never opened myself up to the forums, so I figured I\'d open myself up to the madness.

http://www.coolminiornot.com/197847

I did a lot of firsts on this guy, most notably using a wet palette after taking JBT\'s class the weekend before ReaperCon. I actually asked him how he\'d paint this figure in NMM during one of our breaks, and he said, \"I wouldn\'t, I would use metallics.\" I asked him if he were to use NMM, though, how he\'d go about it. He lowered his head and raised his eyebrows slightly in the international symbol of \"Read my lips\" and said, \"I would use metallics,\" followed by a smile of course. I think I should\'ve listened to him at this point. The whites are pretty washed out in the pictures (which are actually kind of bad, I\'ll see if I can snap more tomorrow) but you can see where I put all my highlights and shading at least. It\'s definitely different from my usual style of NMM.

The flaming sword I was never happy with. It started out as orange/yellow flames but the mini devolved into \"Flaming Sword with Paladin\" so I went with the blue instead. The palette was intentionally limited, as even though I originally painted him for eBay I usually let Reaper take photos of minis I do so they can use it on their website and in magazines. I had talked with Ron (their art director) at paint club one week about how he envisioned the model, so I stuck with what he wanted and what I thought would look good. Apparently it worked for him, as Reaper is now the proud owners after some negotiations, which is how yet another mini of mine will be at GenCon next week but not me :D . At least stop by Reaper\'s booth so you can see just how bad of a photographer I can be.

The side-cloth thingies drove me nuts as well. I kept trying different freehand on them as leaving them blank just looked too weird with how busy the rest of the mini is. In the end I painted on the arrows and lines and called it a day, though if you look at the back shot you\'ll see how I didn\'t continue the line across the stole draped between the shoulders. I\'m such a slacker.

This was my first OSL piece as well. I kept it to a subtle effect, as I was painting the figure kinda bright (outside noon-ish) and knew unless the blades were going nuclear they wouldn\'t gleam all that much in the metal. If I were going to redo him I\'d put him in a dungeon corridor-type setting and really go nuts with the OSL though.

Anyhow, here are five shots of the guy; please give me comments and critiques on how I could improve this guy (besides never, ever trying to do a fake marble base again, not photoing a blue mini on a blue background, and learning how to use a camera, of course :D ).

Great paintjob. Something looks funny with the lighting though, like it\'s shot with a fluorescent bulb or something.

It was actually four natural light incandescents clustered around the photo pad; I think I may not have had their camera on the correct white-balance setting.

I think you did a really beautiful job with this one. The highlights for me are the NMM gold and the little glowy dagger on the shield. I also like the facial expression.

I do think that the lighting may be letting it down a bit in the pics, but overall I think it\'s a solid 9 or so from me.

i really like the job ya did on the face here...
the gold armour is not really screamin\' gold for me though...such a huge amount of nmm is hard to pull off unless ya paint it everyday like the rackham guys, or are a master like arjay...

jeremie was right, real metallics would have been much better...of course i\'m biased, \'cause i\'m all about real metals...

congrats on sellin\' him to reaper...it\'s always cool to know that your minis are travellin\' to cons for all to see...

cheers

OK I captured it and did a simple Image >Adjustments> Auto Color
Then Image > Adjustments> Brightness/contrast and increased the brightness by 7(%).

Hope you don\'t mind.:D

Wow, lotta comments when I forget to check :D.

@mattrock: Thanks! I\'m looking forward to getting the re-shots done when he gets back from GenCon with better lighting and a new backdrop.

@freakinacage: I\'m pretty glaze-happy when I layer, so it tends to fudge out all the mistakes so they\'re not noticeable. The back armor plates are the roughest spots on him I think, but it\'s hard to tell with the current shadow being cast by the stole.

@nick232: I can handle a cartoonish thumbs up :D.

@Mr. Dragonsreach: yeah, the autoadjust does take it to being much closer to the actual mini\'s colors/depth. I used to have Photoshop on my old pc, but now I just have GIMP, so I\'m still playing around with getting it to adjust things to where I like it. Once I have my own camera I think it\'ll be easier to walk things in. I did some color/brightness correction on the photographs, but when I did all five the backgrounds looked very much different even though the mini was consistent. If I had the time when I posted to cut them all out and put them on a new background I would\'ve, but I didn\'t want people to see five shots of the same mini with crazily changing backdrops and think I\'d edited the photos to falsely enhance the mini. I\'m a big believer in showing all the flaws/scars/ugly spots
:D.

@fieldarchy: Yeah, you caught me Meg :D. I usually do the skin first before the rest of the model so I can go back in once it\'s mostly done to pump up or bleed the contrast if needed (also to add in ambient colors as well). I meant to go back and punch up the purple shadows a bit more, and put in a bit more of a yellowy highlight along with Ghost White accents along his right cheekbones but ran out of time. I know, I\'m a slacker.

And I happen to really love this sculpt. Yes, it\'s waaaay over the top, but it\'s consistently so; some minis have either huge swords, or overworked armor, or huge shields, but Almaran\'s balanced all over in his larger-than-life-osity (-ishness?). My sole concession to not going too overboard was to paint a wood grain on the back of the shield to suggest that huge thing wasn\'t solid metal.

I quite like the sculpt as well. As Meg has essentially said: sometimes the WoW look can be fun and in my opinion, this is one of those times. Matter of fact, I\'ll likely end up getting a copy of this guy to do up in true metallics.

Next time I go into my local hobby shop I will probably leave with this miniature! Great work! I like the sword, looks like it has a nice inner glow. I also like what you did utilizing mostly blue and gold/yellow, simple scheme, great paintwork and IMHO awesome result! Cheers!

8-8.5 for me. I\'m not a huge fan of NMM but given the style of the sculpt I think it works with the mini.

As far as the photos go, they\'re only in need of some simple tweaking (although getting the balance right in-camera is a good idea so by all means work on that). Here\'s another tweak option, top row is before and after so you can compare more easily and below is the after at full size:

See how when you compare directly it looks kinda like a sheet of grey film or tracing paper has been removed from the image? This is the classic type of level adjustment that is often necessary (even in professional photos by the way {!} just much less normally). Very easy to do in Photoshop, GIMP or PSP.
