All my bases are belong to crap...

I always do the same old rubbish for bases, often using green flock/static grass and then painting the egde goblin green. Other times I use sand and a quick dry brush.

I am an incredibly impatient painter (its the conversions I like doing) and I just want to knock out as many \'ok looking\' minis for use in my games as possible.

This has lead to my bases looking boring and plain.

For character models or special projects I try to take more time and personalise them more but I never like the results.

So has anyone got any ideas for \'quick to do\' but effective looking bases of many types and styles?

Well.... whenever I have to wait for something to dry or when I\'m bored or just because I have nothing better to do I make a base. I have quite a collection right now :D I have made so many that I even offered some to groundforge, but I never got a reply (If you read this you better feel bad about it you bugger :p).

There is no real way to tell you how to make a simple base... it\'s all spontaneous creativity for me. Usually I have finished bases and then put the miniatures on one I think is appropriate.
So... are you painting an army or was this a general question? With armies you kinda have a theme and could have the appropriate bases.

Combine cork basing (quite a few threads and I think a couple of articles) with Mosch\'s do \'em whenever and you should be able to get a good variety at a decent clip once you get a feel for doing them.

Also play with some of the water effects for the ones that are going to sit around and wait for a mini to fit them (keeps the waiting for them to dry from being so torturous), if you\'re wanting something that\'ll get second looks on a gaming table especially.

i say dont go over the top. too much sometimes over powers the mini. keep practicing

and i can personally recommend the figure trader and, of course, our very own ground forge

I usually do sand, paint it white, then flock with snow. turns out looking like snow, unlike some of that crap at games day

I guess you could add gravel, or rubble (woodland scenic rocks) in certain areas. It breaks up the green. Maybe that will help.

Thanks for all the great replies, you\'ve given me a lot to think about.

I noticed that people on here tend to paint the edge of the base black, While I like it (black goes with anything) I always think a black edge looks as though you havent painted it and therefore seems unfinished?

Anyway round this or do I just change the way I think. :D

I just sand the lot of it, then drybrush bestial brown, bleached bone and white..(GW paints..)
I then spread a little static grass \'round the base in clumps! and DONE!

I tried this thing once, and it worked well...
i used the little crumbs out of a pouch of rolling tobbaco. its cool as, looks like rotted vegtation, like the mulch on a forrest floor. the lighter stuff looks like pine bark mulch.
i also use stuff like sun damaged sponge foam thats been sprey painted heritage green for moss. you spread some superglue on the area you want to have mossy, press the foam into it, leave it to dry and then rip it off. dry brush it a little and BINGO. moss. i have heaps of that foam that i use for everything.

i do may kinds of bases, and ill often spend as much time on a base as any other part of the mini. as people have mentioned the key is creativity. i like to come up with a \"story\" that fits the mini, and then build a base to match. green stuff and bits of all types work wonders on bases. gs can be used to make flat, riveted steel, shale or granite type rocks, roots etc. vegetation is easy to do also - i use normal flock and static grass from gw in combination with some of the long grass from woodland scenics and plastic aquarium plant leaves. i saw one mini made by nsa where he made jungle plant leaves out of thin wire and tape -they looked great! if you still want to keep them fast i suggest just adding variation to each of your standard bases - build them up a bit with some pva and soil and them flock them as normal.add small stones and bones and stuff like that BEFORE you flock so that you can paint them. combine flack with static grass to add tufts etc and then give them a few patchy washes of inks in whichever color you prefer (greens are best) to add color variation to the vegetation.
if you have trouble with ideas just brows cmon for ace bases.

Black painting bases looks cool, it\'s the \"thing\" at the moment. It\'s funny how even in miniature painting there is fashion/convention. For example about 4+ years ago when I first joined the hobby even GD entries had goblin green base edges. I remember painting my Dwarfs bases black on the edges and thinking it was a bit wrong at the time. I\'m waiting for it to change again:D

I make alot of extra cork bases (and other kinds too) when I have nothing else to do. I\'ve been toying with the idea of selling them so if you want some just give me a pm and I\'ll see what I can do. That goes for anyone. Although I really don\'t know what a good price would be... Guess it\'d depend on the numbers...

Everyone always puts stuff on top of their bases. To give extra depth, I like to cut sections out of the top of my bases, glue a disc of plasticard underneath, and build stuff out of the hole created in there. It\'s great for urban terrian with culverts and allows you a convenient valley area to do water effects

This is just a start. More are in the works. :D

Seriously, though, I generally sculpt a custom base for single characters based on what kind of composition and \"setting\" will fit best with the figure.

If you are doing armies though, either flock or sand is quick and simple, but resin kicks \'em up a notch.

Here\'s some fun stuff too!
