ahhhh so close

i juust missed out on bronze at Conflict Scotland\'s golden griffon contest. I got to meet Jervis Johnson and Jez Goodwin at least and when i asked what i could do to improve my entry Jervis Johnson told me it was a very hard decision between my giant and a steam tank but mine only didnt get higher because of some slight inconsistancy in the quality of the entire piece. He complimented the face, torso and arms of the giant though which he said were excellent and as he went past later he wished me good luck with my chaos spawn project which id shown him earlier. i got some good advice though and the new model for the Cold ones is absolutely gorgeous.

its weird watching the public looking at the models compared to the judges...the halfling that won was hardly even glanced at by the public but a lot of people liked mine and a very detailed model with pink tyranids and a space marine that was next to it. still...only my first contest and i was so close. i made the final cut which was a bonus.

has anyone else noticed the public sometimes like models the judges dont pick more?

:(

oh well, aside from the fact that i was awake for over 40 hours it wasnt a bad day, just wished id had the money to buy more minis.

meh the public are fickle. the judges (hopefully) know what they are on about.

still pretty good for a first contest! well don and good luck with the next one!

Well the biggest issue with the \"Crowd\" vote is they can\'t really see the small and usually very well miniatures up close as they are usually a few feet away behind glass. They can UUU and Ahhh at the big pieces because they can see them better.

actually at Conflict they could get very close to the models, they were permitted to lean over the table though not to touch at least and there was always a guy standing guarding the models. They could get up close enough to see details at least....part of me thinks its a bad idea, i was always paranoid they might get knocked off the table by anyone walking past with a bag over their shoulder or something. it was nice being able to look closer at the other minis though and i managed to predict the final cut too. there were some nice minis there, there was a gorgeous space marine one with a wall in the backdrop and candles with the candlelight on the wall.

Still a huge difference between what you see when you look at a cabinet or a table full of minis and when you carefully assess a miniature up close.

I remember when I got bronze in lotr my Frodo stood right next to a very nice Troll with good flashy NMM etc. My guess is that not many of the viewers saw my tiny guy until he got next to the other winners.

Grats on the final cut in your first competition.

I made honorable mention in my first GD competition (GD US 1). They didn\'t have certificates back then. I\'m still kicking myself for not bringing my steam tank which was way better than a steam tank that won it\'s category but I didn\'t bring mine because I copied the paint job off the box at the time (so did the winner of that category).

Now don\'t do what I did... I used to win lots of competitions pre GD, pretty much every local competition I entered back then (ahh, the 80s). Problem is the rest of the world improved and I didn\'t. Keep your skills up and keep working at it so you stay on top of your \'game\' (assuming competitions float your boat).

I never been to Conflict. I actually beat the guy who won one in the local GW against the same model bahaha!

That\'s better than a trophy.

Keep trying, you reap what you sew. Better luck next time ;)
