Advise or Criticise

I am a firm believer in dicussing minis and taken advice from painters who are willing to give it. But one thing that really chokes me is when people diss your work when they cant paint the side of a barn with a 10\' brush :cussing:

Every painter at every level can give advice to others but when I was recently checking out the top painters I on this site some of which put blood, sweat and tears into a mini I was amazed at the amount of people who were giving low scores for work, fair enough that is thier right but when I go to check thier work where is it ?????

I can respect painters who advise but people who just criticise I have no patience for :flame:

there are a number of people I have had great advice from on this site and also in real life who can\'t necessarily paint particularly well, but are well read and knowledgable about the theory of painting. You also dont need to be a godly painter to be able to know what you like and what you would do differently, so either way its no skin off my nose :D

completely with Pete on this. My girlfriend, who doesn\'t paint, will offer ideas and advice, and it\'s as valuble as anyone elses.

what is probably more important, is whether the artist who is being offered the advice, is big enough and humble enough to listen to it!

You don\'t have to be an artist to appreciate art - or to see where it could improve.
I agree with my predecessor repliers.

I would also point out that there are probably many great painters out there who don\'t own a digital camera and so they don\'t have a gallery, even though they may be ace painters. You don\'t know who you are dissing.

Another thing that may be a problem is the language barrier. This is a very multicultural site and i think sometimes people who may have english as a second language can come across quite bluntly in their comments.*

Its just a matter of developing the standard \'CMoN Thick Skin\' (TM) and getting stuck in there

*edit: apart from Tony Manero who is just blunt as a matter of course ;) (just kidding Tony, you know we love you!)

I\'ve got nothing to add, except for an analogy: if the coaches of the various sports teams had to be of equal or better skill level, then they\'d be playing instead of coaching. Thing is, there are many people who have it all upstairs, and who know how to give quality critique, but are unable to perform themselves.

Of course, that doesn\'t account for jealousies...

just realised the oddness of this rant

The complaint is against people who leave comments to go with the \"low\" scores they leave. We shouldn\'t complain about that. We should encourage it. Much better than anonymous sniping.

Maybe Chern can add a feature saying that unless you score \"THIS HIGH\" you cannot leave criticism on other miniatures, especially ones we need to bow down to.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

BUT...not to be completely sarcastic...moderating comments I can see there is a difference between critiques that are trying to be honest, and some that are just being spiteful or controversial for controversy\'s sake.
