Advanced Scout Armor (space marines)

I'm working on some ideas modifying space marine scout armor with power armor parts to represent HQ selections like Kahn and a Librarian. Looking for some ideas to improve the poses and the blending of these parts. I'm not looking to make tournament ready models, more like having interesting and fitting HQ selections to play in friendly games in front of my mostly scout army.

I'm putting together a Raven Gaurd army, so I'm trying to get active, lively poses to represent thier skirmishing style of fighting...

Librarian Webern (need ideas on making a psychic hood and tooling lightening around the power axe)

I don't know if it was intended, but that last one certainly gave me a chuckle.
For the lightening, you could try very loosely wrapping very fine wire around the axe head to represent the nimbus of energy surrounding it. Not sure if that would work, but it might be a step along in thought.

interesting idea. i like the posing of the first, the second looks a tad silly though. if you want accurate posing, try and thing what you are aiming for and do it yourself. that way you can see how comfortable/realistic a pose is.

he also appears to have a random blob of something in his waist..

for the hood, try flattening out some gs to form a cap over the top of his head, then when thats dry sculpt some cabling

why have you drilled out the axe head of the first guy?

and what happened to the photography for the second?!!

Replace the neck of the armor with an old shoulderpad which you have cut to resemble a psychic hood. Works great and is fairly simple.

For the second guy, I don't wanna sound too harsh but you really need to do something about that waist, he looks like Barbie atm. And if you would bend the leg (at the knee) he has in the air atm so that the sole of his boot is pointing down and slightly back you would get a more comfortable pose. And please don't place him at the tip of a rock like that, that is something that doesn't make much sense and is only cool when ninja bunnies do it in the sunset, give him a more sloping stone instead and place him on the most horizontal part of the stone.
Kinda like this:

(do forgive me my terrible paint skills. XD )

But I do love what you have done this far with the first model, reminds me a lot of my own scouts actually. :D
A great Idea that with a few tweaks will be totally awesome! Cheers!

Lighter Pics of "russian dance" scout captain

@Rugne, yeah man I'm really new to this.. I think this is my first mostly pinned models I've done... it is a little silly, so no worries! We've decided over at sons of corax(the rg players page) that he's doing the russian dance. I like the nimbus Idea, I'd not thought of that.

@Chrome, I second FIAC on the mad paint skills... theres almost a picasso like nature to the line and ink drawing... ;) I think what you say makes a lot of sense. the graphic demonstrates it well.

gotta work on getting the gs transition right. will take more time on that in the future. I'm going to go ahead and paint and repost these, then I'll post pics of the second version of the man on the hill figure. Need to get another double eagle back pack... ug... expensive bits!

hey... I like Ninja Bunnies! j/k.

@freakinacage, hey man! How are ya? I like the first figure enough to keep and use him... the axe head is drilled out to be an anchor point for some of the lightening that will be shooting out of the axe. I like the idea of the axe being a locus for his psychic ability.

So, no more dramatic lighting, here's the ugly truth behind the man on the hill mini...

wow, I'm really starting to not like this mini at all.

recovering bits from a failed project.

secondary thought, is there a thread somewhere about dismantling glued bitz, you know getting the wargear off with out destroying it? maybe I should take the head, sword, and double eagle backpack to less sucky version number 2?

Depends how you glued it, superglue, should snap right off, plastic glue.. urgh, not so lucky, might get away with very carefully cutting them off

cut with a very thing and very shap blade. very carefully. if you want to use the detail itself (like a symbol of some kind), you could do a press mould. that way you don't destroy the original and you can use it loads

The problem IMO is that the standard marine parts look way oversized on the little scout legs, you might get away with a head, or adding a shoulderpad, but the entire torso and the arms just look way too big.
But hey, like I said, that's just my opinion

@hubbabubba: if you look closely you can see that it is most likely the original scout torso he has been using.

Hey guys, still working on this. Will have progress pics soon. I've got the backpack off of the kahn miniature using freakinacage's advice... was pretty easy because the blade was sharp and the glue joins were small.

One issue is a need to create a buffer between the scout torso and the backpack which is designed for the marine torso. I've used a square of greenstuff the last couple of times, and I'll paint them black to hide them, but this might not be the optimal way to do it.

Good eyes Chrome! It is indeed a scout torso.

@hubbabubba, yes you are right there are some porportional issues. Without sparking a huge (and mostly pointless) debate about marine porportions, I'd just say that I like that the features are slighlty larger than normal scouts, it makes them pop out a little more as hq and squadleaders this way. Also my camera has been a little close and is throwing stuff off a little porportionally. The sizes of stuff is all wonky with the marines, bolters would way 40 or 50 lbs! Wait, I said I wasnt going to start in on that... ;) Thank you for your opinion though, and I see where you are coming from.

Update with Photos of Librarian Webern

Its been awhile, Here's some views of Webern, pre dull coat.

There is still time to address issues with the paint. If there are some touch up hints etc I'd love to hear them. I'm still disatisfied with the cloth of the pants. I'm going to be going through some tutorials on painting in general as I feel I'm missing the boat on some simple issues with paint and wash technique.

I did work from a flat black primer this time, and actually got it to work for me as ussually I build to dark from flat white. Going dark and building up paint layers to light seems much more forgiving of a process.

Thanks!

The power back and other power armore bits are an effore to make my hq's resemble scouts a bit more... basically like artificer armor is to power armor, this is advance carpace to scout armor... Basically I'm using a librarian statline, this model just looks cooler leading scouts.
