Acid/Toxic Pools or Ponds & Stagnant Lakes Query

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on CMON - I stumbled upon this website recently and I've been addicted to trolling through the articles/minis etc ever since! (I apologise if there's similar threads stickied which I haven't found yet).

I'm currently working on a small diorama of Warhammer 40K Space Marines. I'm wanting to have a squad of Assault Marines jump-packing their way over an Acid Pool/Stagnant Lake or something of that description.

I've just bought myself a bottle of Water Effects C1212 by Woodland Scenics. Having never worked with a Water Effect product before I was looking for some guidance.

For example:

Can I mix in Games Workshop paints to give it that 'acid' look I'm after or is it best to let the product cure a few hours before beginning to shape/add in paints etc? Does anyone have specific tutorials on how to make 'acid' i.e. bubbling lakes etc.

FYI if you've never used it before the product has a thick, PVA, type texture and dries clear in 24 hours.

Any information is greatly appreciated :)

Niall.

Hey, welcome to the madhouse. The Woodland Scenics site has most of the info you need to get started in one of their FAQs, here, after that it's just a matter of getting some experience under your belt. There's also a link on the product page.

More on these pages:

Bubbling might best be done by sculpting though, rather than by using some kind of simulated water - after it's set and you've painted it the colours you want a few coats of a nice gloss finish will complete the effect.

Welcome to the forums! sometimes the best way to produce a look like this is to paint the effect on the board underneath and then water effects over it to give the gloss look. Is there a specific color you're looking to paint this toxic pool? I'd do some research on what actual contaminated water sources look like and use that as a springboard. I searched "toxic lake" on google and got these:

There's also a good example of how this was achieved in the Imperial Armor masterclass book. If you have the means, I highly recommend taking a look at it.

I was wondering about water effects and bubbles. Can you add anything (like oil) that won't mix with the water effects to give the impression of a popped bubble? (similar to putting a drop of water in parrafin wax and letting it dry. leaves a near perfect crater, like a thick viscous bubble just popped)

Ok Water Effects is exactly that; A material to make water effects. Static water is best done with REALISTIC Water from Woodland Scenics.
Now there are a couple of ways to make bubble that I can think :-
Basically glue a bead to a piece of Plasticard (Styrene sheet) and put the effects around and over it.
Try and trap a bubble of air in the effects.
Buy some Glass beads from a hobby supply shop and insert in the water prior to drying. Getting a colour close to the toxic base will make it look closer to the real deal.
