Achieving a matt black basecoat.

Hello!

I am painting Space Marines in a black color scheme. But getting a matt black basecoat can be quite difficult. It sometimes turns out a bit glossy at the end. Or worse, with some parts of the model a bit glossy and other more matt.

The procedure I have been working with is the following:

1. Light grey primer from rattle can (because I don't have a black one).
2. Airbrush Minitaire Raven Black with some Vallejo Matt Medium. This take several coats and is a bit annoying to work with.
3. Brush painted a thin layer of Minitaire Raven Black with Vallejo Matt Medium.

The result is a bit glossy overall.

What can I be doing wrong? My only guess at the moment is that I didn't shake the Raven Black paint pot enough. Could that be the issue?

That could be one of the issues.
Or more likely the black is not a good matt black. Try a different one.

Also if you are painting a black marine... why not undercoat with black and maybe add 1 layer of a matt black (some matt artist color (GA for example), or a scale75 one (they are usually very matt colors))

I thought that the layer of Raven Black and matte medium from vallejo would do the trick, but I did not get a consistent result.

I have now ordered a paint set of scale75 paints. It's the "Shades of Doom" set which includes a colour called "Decay Black". I have no idea if it's matte or not, but I hope it is.

IIIII don't know.
First it's not really a black, but a dark grey.
Second I'm not sure what the difference between Scale75 colors and the Scale75 Fantasy and Games colors is. It could be just different shades, but also finish (satin instead of matt).

I really like how the example model turned out and the "Decay Black" looks quite matte to me.

I would have bought the regular "black", but it is not available here in Sweden and I don't want to wait for it to arrive from Spain!

I use scale75 range, there new paints from the fansty line are little less matt than there normal range. That color should give you what you need. However if you aiming for pure matt black look, go with there black and white set. Those color will make black matt armor really stand out and look like back primer effect. Thats what i used to paint up death company marines, if your going for raven guard look, than the black and white set has what you need as well. Shades of doom is really good for adding depth and making shadows on black armor if that makes sense.

If you to make really deep black, i suggest picking up there black ink, this will dry very glossy so build up layers slowly with it, than if using air brush spray from bottom with decay black, and top with normal black. If not using brush work than just go over with a black you like better to knock out the shine.

I tried out the Shades of Doom-set yesterday and it seems to be working nicely. The greys contain some green which I'm not sure if it will work with the yellow that I was planning as a contrast color. But on the other hand, it might work prefectly.

I think I will buy in to the Scale75 sets more in the future and post my results here!

yellow is tricky color, not sure on the how the green would go. You can build yellows up from brown or tan colors, if you're trying to make the yellow really pop, go back and build from either white or off white. I think on your side of the pond they call it juicing where you take a strong ink tone and add to each layer. The yellow ink the make is very strong and will bring up yellow. It's really a pain in the dick to bring yellow up from black, it can be done but will take many thin layers of yellow to avoid brush strokes.

The black you are looking for from SC is called Flat Black. Very matt(e).

If you have an airbrush there are lots of options. Personally I would use Vallejo surface primer

The Vallejo matte medium won't make it any more Matt it's just creating problems.

If the black primer isn't black or matte enough a couple of thin layers of Vallejo black should do it

Me I use dullcote at the end.

When I paint black, base layer is not black
