I havent been on the site for a few days, after looking around for a bit I thought I\'d check how my stuff has been doing.

Then I find ive got a new comment on my Tau , http://www.coolminiornot.com/?id=41161
which reads-

Rating: 8
I\"ve studied this picture multiple times. I\'ve come to the conclusion that despite being a very nice image to view, that this is a photoshop rendering and not painted. The color texture of the blends, just the quality of the color does not match the color quality of the rock it stands on. The rock in my mind has the look and feel of painted application. I\'m not intending to offend, but thats my comment. I still mark high the originality of the image.

Now after weeks of painting this model I\'m VERY upset at this glib statement. The photo came out so well that all i did in photoshop was save it as a jpeg!
Next time please get your facts straight before making comments like this.

This is the comment on #42685, from Duckula, about my Cave Troll:

Rating: 6
I would probably give it a seven if the picture was a bit better... I have problems with taking photo\'s too I like the warts!!! Is the tree a bit of real conifer?

Now, I looked at Duckula\'s photos. He has no right to make such a comment about my pix - this clown obviously uses only one lamp when lighting his minis, where I use three, and a much better background, thank you very much.

I will grant that the pieces Duckula posted show more painting skill than mine, but he should zip it where comments on photo quality are concerned.

I\'d say that the folks who often make the most outrageous comments often have the least room to talk - note that the bone head that posted the PhotoShop crack has NO pictures posted AT ALL, while your piece has one of the highest ratings on the site.

It is a breathtakingly beautiful mini, and my eyes bug out just looking at it.

My true feelings about a person who would make a crack like that when he shows no examples whatsoever of his own work would get this message deleted from the thread.

I can understand that you are upset. I would feel the same and I don\'t think this is a photoshoped image.
But he/she is right about one thing - the quality of the blends on the miniature and the rock don\'t match - probably because the rock has been drybrushed and the miniature carefully blended

Your Tau is a great miniature. While I am not a huge fan of SENMM I can see why you spent weeks on the miniature and let me tell you it was well worth the effort in my humble opinion.

Don\'t spend too much thought on it, accept the comment as an opinion of someone else and move on (easier said than done, I know ;) ).

Hey Nehojo, I liek your Tau very much. As a person practicing the NMM techniques constantly, I can understand your grief! It is amazing how you can make out the subtle brush strokes here and there that must have been HELL to do with Photoshop!!!! I am kidding of course... It is very tempting for people to say such things when you paint smoothly. That being said, your Tau rocks. ONly thing I didn\'t like was that some of the panel lines seemed to lack the attention of the rest of the model...

Take this fool\'s comment as a compliment as your painting is smooth enough to raise a reaction like that!

Venting is good for you

Beautiful work, Nehojo. I think Glyn\'s statement just about sums it up.

that\'s RIDICULOUS! I\'ve seen it, and unless photoshop comes in a 3d package now, that hasn\'t been messed around with! I do know for a fact that the camera Nejoho uses is....very good to say the least, and gives great results. A comment like that is justplain rude.

Hey look....

You know you\'ve made it bigtime when people simply cannot believe that you can possess such a level of skill:bouncy:
What a compliment:D (if you think about it....)

I don\'t mind people no pictures posted on the site. More room for the rest of us! lollol It jus bothers me to see someone with no room to talk making such inflamatory remarks about the work of others. You don\'t do that.

OK, so maybe I don\'t need to reply to that, Dauber, since it is obviously tongue in cheek. But wanted to throw in my two-cents worth anyway. :D

I just took a look at your image with photoshop- either you are a MASTER with photoshop or you painted this yourself. Under magnification you can see wet blending lines and color transitions- even a mistake! (gasp!) I think it would have taken more time with photoshop to do this than actually painting it. Its a great paint job- pure and simple.

Actually he is either a master with photoshop or a master painter :D

Seems to me like we need a permanent venting thread.Ive a pic of the Tau on my desktop along with some others to practice from.
As Ive learned from my own \"experience\" with commentors, this type of comment isnt worth a seconds thought.
Why do they give it 8 as a cool mini when they think its \"rendered\".
BTW while were on the subject what do you think is a reasonable amount of editing of a pic.Personally I crop and resize, maybe a title.I did remove a hair in psp on one (I dont consider this cheating).
Are we allowed to use auto contrast, color balance etc?

I\'d definately say that adjusting contrast, white balance, color balance and the like is fine. Smoothing blends and the like would be stepping over the line.

Good Photos Are Important!

I don\'t see anything wrong at all with using Photoshop to do things like color balance, cropping, etc. As long as everything is done to try to make the picture look like the mini does in real life, it\'s all good.

Besides, it is important to get good photos, given the nature of this site. And a bit of consideration in rotating, cropping, and saving as appropriate file types is just part of the deal in posting pics to the \'net.

Agreed.:D

And Nejoho, don\'t worry, the Tau is superb, if the guy thinks the blending is too perfect to be painted, I think you should take it as a compliment, the only sad thing is he only rated it an 8! I gave you a 10. ;)

As for what Cerridwyn1st said, be careful there! We can all comment on things we think need improving, even if we are unable to improve those aspects in our own work at the present time. It may seem hypocritical to point out that someone\'s photograpy is in need of improvement, knowing that your own is not as good, but I think we all a capable of providing good constructive criticism to painters/ photographers with more skill than our own. :D

Regards

Kat

> If you read my comments, I was trying to indicate that I liked it, but the photo made it hard to be sure of the paint job... I also said I have problems with taking photo\'s too... was this not clear enough?
In other posts I have indicated that I need advice on taking photo\'s and that I consider my self a steady 6 rated painter... I never claim to be better than you or anyone else.
Calling me a clown for making a friendly comment is not very nice really and unneccessary.

Now, I looked at Duckula\'s photos. He has no right to make such a comment about my pix - this clown obviously uses only one lamp

> I only have one lamp at the mo :(

when lighting his minis, where I use three, and a much better background, thank you very much.

> absolutley right! Bravo for you :)

I will grant that the pieces Duckula posted show more painting skill than mine,

>Thank you, but I think yours are just as good.

but he should zip it where comments on photo quality are concerned.

> Why? I was just making a comment. As i have made on a couple of my own posts

I\'d say that the folks who often make the most outrageous comments often have the least room to talk

> I agree... but was my comment outrageous?

I said I liked it... you responded well to my first comment.. I think?!?!
I said I liked the warts and asked a question of your tree...
I am sorry I offended you :(

A quick follow up comment

Vincegamer posted a comment on the Troll too, and he seems to understand where I was coming from :~(

Anyway... no hard feelings on my part.

Apology accepted. I will admit I was a bit out of line, and owe you an apology as well. Sorry I smeared you so badly, when you were trying to be helpful.

Actually, the \"outrageous\" crack was more aimed at the guy who commented about Nejoho\'s piece. I was outraged that someone with no posted examples of his or her own work could say something like that about such a good paintjob.

Seemed like as good a time as any to vent a little myself. :)

As far as your own pix, you\'d be amazed what you can do with cheap desk lamps. If you are in the states, you can get them at Walmart for about $5. Chern has an article about using cheap desk lamps and an oxfordcloth shirt to shoot his pix. Funny, but it works.

I\'m retiring the granite drawing paper from photography service. The grainy surface makes the pictures look fuzzy. Likewise for using the Kodak photo compression feature.

I will use Photo Express, which has many of the features of PhotoShop, but the software costs a lot less. The compression feature doesn\'t leave the pictures grainy. like using Kodak\'s Picture Easy.

Anyway, Count Duckula, I\'m sorry if I hurt your feelings. Have a chocky bikky on me, and I hope that makes it better. :D

Apology accepted too!

No problems... Incidentally, I posted a third comment publically apologising :)
Hopefully this won\'t wind you up ;)

I think the Tau Battle suit is amazing and for that poster to suggest that it was doctored is, I agree, outrageous :flame:

I will have to get more lamps :)
Thanks for the tip and pointer to Cherns article.

I use paintshop pro 7 which seems to be great... can you tell from my piccies?

Don\'t worry mate, I\'ve had caffiene and choccy biccies ;)
