A Set of Brushes

I need help choosing all the brushes I need and might need.

I have the citedal brush set in my cart in Games Work Shop store but I heard that their brushes are not the best. I am willing to fork more dough to get a better set, problem is I can't find a set and I have to pick brushes individually. I'm overwhelmed and a little uncertain by the numbering system and how to tell which brush is #1 #2 #5 the naming varies and for Citedal they name their brushes based on the job you expect them to do (Dry Brush, Basecoat brush). Is there a better quality brush set which include all the brushes I need or should I stick with Citedal Brushes for now?

As I said in a thread below, Windsor and Newton Series 7 are probably one of the best but they are very expensive. That said there is nothing wrong with the citadel brushes, I use them and have no problems :)

Roughly

Basecoat Brush = 2 or 1
Detail Brush = 1
fine Detail Brush = 0 or 00

depends a bit on brand, how fat the barrel is. etc.

Buy some GW & a 1 and a 0 of another brand. Compare them :) Even if the GW are inferior they will be useful for basecoating, drybrushing, mixing paint, etc.

Cheers, B.

These brushes are expensive.. unless you shop around the internet.. its easy to find them at prices between $8 and $12 each.. try www.dickblick.com.

The problem is I am not sure if I am picking the right brush size. Sometimes they name them with "Sizes" like Size 1 and sometimes it's something like this 0/1 or 1/0.

Take this for an example. It is a size 2 brush which I can use for blending and base coating?

and below are size 0 and 1 for fine details (out line, eyes and such)

I guess these are what I am going to need for the "high quality brushes" and the rest I can just get away by buying GW set which include big/medium/small dry brushes and what have you.

With the 3 Winsor & Newton fine brushes and GW set I guess I'm set?

Clicked on the link for the first brush, if you click on the picture to enlarge it you can read the label and see that it'a actually a "00" not a "2".
The other two look to be a "1" and a "0" which is what you're after.

I reckon if you get the 3x W&N & a GW set you've got a nice mix of brushes to keep you going for the rest of the year. Without trying them out you won't know what you're looking for in your next set anyway (shorter bristles, slimmer barrels, more snap, etc).

Cheers, B.

Fair enough!

These should keep me painting for now. :)

i use a rosemary and co or a w+n series seven number 2 brush for just about everything. they have enough bulk to make base coating nice and the quality point that can still dot eyes. have a ton of rubbish brushes for drybrushing, battle damage and overbrushing

Dude, check it out... that one's still on the first page! There have got to be two dozen more where that came from.

I would recommend you save yourself some money and buy a few golden taklon brushes (the amber-coloured synthetics you see everywhere) for the bulk of the work and confine yourself to quality Kolinsky rounds just for detail work, where you can fully take advantage of their awesome pointing ability.
