A game for youngins' to enter table top gaming.

Hey all, I was hoping to get some suggestions on a table game with miniatures for young people. I have 4 nephews 8-14 and when they saw the orc pigs I'm working on they lost their minds.

I am not a gamer so I don't know much about that part of it. I do know that I can't afford to get them going in an extensive game like Warhammer (yet) but I've noticed there are a lot of new games that have come out that seem to be played at a much smaller level.

I suppose I'm looking for something that is cool (of course) and uses some pretty cool mini's on a small scale. My hope is they will take an interest in this hobby and or painting minis. Can you help me or am I just dense. Well, I am dense...so could you just give me some suggestions? Thanks.

I'd look at some of the uber cool board games.

For instance, Last Night On Earth. It's got minis, zombies, and relatively easy rules to follow.

Space Hulk is another (but maybe a bit more expensive). Plus you could paint all the minis!

There are plenty of board games that feature minis, and it seems just the right stuff as a primer for full tabletop stuff.

If you can find a copy of Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel you'd be set. It's oop and can be hard to find with all the parts, but it's a really good introductory game. Like Supervike said, find a modern boardgame that is minis centric and you should be set. I just had to add my 2cents since one of the other guys here at work just got his copy from Ebay delivered today and it was on my mind. ; ) Some other games as examples.... Hero Quest (oop) or Doom: The Boardgame (it should still be in production)

I keep reading about Song Of Blades & Heroes being a good one for younger players...

dude, YES YES YES! so glad someone mentioned it. hands down the best skirmish level minis game out there - for adults and kids. plays in 30mins, takes less than that to learn, plays like a dream, and costs $5. loads of variants and expansions too - steampunk, Arthurian, post apoc, modern.... you name it. im a SoBH junkie. oh, and you can use any minis you have, just stat 'em up (no BS force construction charts to complicate things). the yahoo group is a great place to start (talk to the author, if you'd like). amazing and very active community.

Wow, that was emphatic.

Now I'm going to have to check it out.

very - you wont be disappointed. i was skeptical of its "simplicity" at first, but after playing a few games i realized how flexible/ modular it was; now im a big fan :claply:. i never used to game with my minis, but im happy to say i now do so casually.

Super Dungeon Explore is being released in August, 50 miniatures in the box, cards, dice, tiles, video game / chibi anime theme (which children should understand easily). We're publishing it so naturally I'm excited :)

I'd also recommend the SDE.

Or the warheads from Urban Mammoth. A bit similar to SDE, but the figures are rather like cartoonish/caricaturish. And with continuing mini-campaign and a few RPG elelments added in. And the best part (from my view) it's really light hearted, not too serious.

hmm, so SDE will be available from here :), good to know.

what about fairy meat?

It´s about cute little , but unfortunately cannibalistic fairies that fight each other. Since it plays " in the real world ". you use cola cans and pens, ect. as terrain. Rules are simple and it doesn´t take it self seriously at all ( the rules suggests the use of an earthworm to measure distances ).

And number two, maybe even better: warheads. Extremely cute minis, very easy to paint , easy to learn because the rulebook is made like a story that let´s you play important scenes to teach you the rules step by step. And when your nephews feel up to it ( and have some experience ) they can try the second part of the rules, witch introduces some RPG features, so their hero can actually grow.
Here´s the link:

oh, and just fyi, one scenario might remind you of a certain black knight from a certain Monty Python movie.

EDIT.: Argh, just saw that MAXXxxx beat me with warheads. well take it as a sign
