A Fully Articulated scratchbuilt Lucius Pattern Warhound by Blackadder

I'm torn between offering this project as a WIP or as a "How to" article. Lucie is fully completed now and has been for the better part of a year. There are a few things I intend to add such as a full set of alternate weapons and a display base but the model itself is complete. I suppose the best thing is to show Lucie (Short for Lucius Pattern) as she is right now and get suggestions on how to proceed in the building dissertation.

Lucie took about a year and a half to build and no, I had no plans or templates so please don't ask for them I did everything by eye taking what information I could gather from images I found on the internet.

She has a very crude internal structure of foam filled posterboard and the main hull, head, and carapace is sheet styrene over that material. The legs are primarily PVC tubing with 5/8 inch dowels for the knee and ankle joints. They are fully movable and pose-able as are the toes, waist, neck and armament stanchions.

Enough said,

Here's Lucie:

All well and good Blackadder you talk about fully pose-able but you give half a dozen images of all the same pose. Tsk, tsk,

I notice that those pics you link to have porn ads at the bottom of em. Might want to warn folks about that...

(or has my computer been wandering off to places it shouldnt have and picked up some bad company...?)

That aside, I think the titan is very nice. The banner is particularly well done. The only gripe I have would be that it could use more small details. Rivets, hatches, and similar scale-significant items. It would also be nice to see some round-the-back shots, as that's where aforementioned worky bits would be most visible.

No porn ads for me, must be based on your browsing history...... actually, obviously not, or I'd have them!

Good work. I agree, the big difference with larger stuff is the smaller details, which you have managed on a lot of it, but the panels seem a but open and devoid. Maybe some damage? Tis a cracking job though and you shold be proud, must have been a helluvan undertaking

but....but...I always clear my history after...erm, I mean, I NEVER look at stuff like that, so I have NO IDEA why such ads might be appearing for me. (Actually, since the ads are for japanese porn, and are in japanese, I suspect it may be because of my location more than anything else.)

Well I tried but I can't replace the thumbs with another host. If a Mod will delete the images I'll add new ones. The host I used doesn't accept anymore images but it was a family oriented site so I can't believe there is any porn associated with it, I've not seen any.The banner is getting quite a few raves and it was simplicity itself to make. I found the Griffin banner on google images, shrunk it down to the appropriate size and printed it on paper with my printer. Then I coated it with matte varnish and cut it out. It will be suspended by chains ultimately but for now it's just temporarily attached.Let me state that Lucie looks fantastic with her gen-u-wine FW accoutrements* and I am forever in the debt of a generous contribution for one of my readers. The afore mentioned accoutrements* were the rubber electrical conduits that connect the head to the hull. Those rubber conduits and the skulls on the cheek vents are the only non-scratch items on Lucie. In natural light where the true colour of the carapace is evident. She's not at all as blue as the flash would indicate.Lucie suffered some battle damage last month and broke a middle toe on her right foot. Repairing her was difficult as I still wanted the toe to function. I'm happy to report the repair went very well and Lucie is still ambulatory with nary a sign that the repair was made thanks to 'METALSET A4' Military Grade Epoxy Resin Cement. Lucie could not have been manufactured as she is without this stuff.

Here she is on a battle board with some Super heavies for support.

Someone asked for a rear view image of Lucie. Here she is in a battlefield scene with FW tanks for comparison. I repainted the old Battleboard and set up Lucie and the tanks etc. but my son must have all his armies with him at school; the only stuff left was pretty pitiful so here is Lucie and company advancing on some foe who in for a very bad day. The last image that shows Lucie from a good angle (The ass-man Blackadder(Hey they say it on Sienfeld :D)!) and shows the intricacies of her detail.

Let's go back to the middle of last year when Lucie was still in her prime (groan).

At that time I still had the weapons and armour to fabricate; a few minor details and of course painting. In this image she just has a coat of primer. I have a complete set of images of the whole manufacture of this model and being new to this forum I was looking for the right place to post a construction article.

I plan eventually to demonstrate how I made this model and exchange modeling techniques with those interested in scratchbuilding.

Lucie was built entirely by eye, there are no plans. The only measurement was that which was provided by FW; that the model stands 10.5 inches tall. Lucie's average height is that 10.5 inches but she can crouch to 9.0 inches and stands 12.25 inches with her legs fully stretched. The hydraulic cylinders limit that height so with them installed she can only stand 11.5 inches tall which is just as well as she looks rather ridiculous in that pose. :D

When I started the project I wanted something that was not just a FW copy but I was infatuated with the overall design if the FW Warhound. I decided to make mine fully movable within the constraints of the material of course. Being basically a plastic model you can't work the joints unlimitedly but they are durable enough to change the pose as often as I pleased for the past year or so.

We'll start with a demonstration of the flexibility of the legs which are 1" PVC tubing for the knee and ankle joins employing 5/8" dowels for the axles

The first and second images demonstrate the range of height she is capable of:

The toes in these images were at the time too weak and they were rebuilt shorter and more robust subsequently.

Lucie employs wood dowels and PVC tubing for her major leg joints.

The dowels have to be tapped in with a small mallet and provide enough friction for her to hold any pose I position her in.

The hydraulic cylinders employ straight pins for the axles and thanks to the telescoping tubing from 'Evergreen' the pistons and cylinders are fully movable.

Since these images were taken I shortened the middle segment of each toe as the toes appeared to be too long. I also replaced the toe joint cylinders with smaller diameter tubing.

I'm pretty sure theree's a rule in 40K that if your model can actually stomp on your opponent's models without you touching it or having to roll dice, you automatically win.

Add weapons that fire air soft BBs to that and you will never be defeated! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Instructables.com is a website with a good set of online software for setting up a set of instructions for this in the form of an article. You can post photos, video, .pdfs, etc to your instruction set. There are even contests that you can win for posting your instructions.
