A few sculpting/casting questions

First, hello all! *waves*

After being \"away\" of the hobby for a couple of years I\'m back and with a couple of questions.

Fimo: The package says 130 ºc for 30m, but I\'m assuming this is for larger sculptures. What about something in 30mm? Should I keep those settings?

Glues and casting: If I want to have my minis cast in metal what can I use to \"glue\" parts, for example, attaching a sword to the hand?

Undercuts: Is there a guide somewhere of the do\'s and specially the don\'ts about casting in metal?

Casting in resin: Feasible for casting your own miniatures at 30mm scale?

Thanks :)

Hi *waves back* and welcome
don\'t know about Fimo much, not many use it for mini sculpting, but
check out the articles section

I already knew about the articles here, but didn\'t even remember about that list. I was a member back in the days it was an e-groups mailing list, before being bought by yahoo.

Acording to some searches I did, it seems that 2-part epoxie glues are ok to use in greens that are to be vulcanized. Can anyone confirm this?

cool, well Ming and the others have recently overhauled the FAQ section, I would think most of your questions would be answered there. Ming is on here also..
hang on

Found and read the FAQ, I urge any sculpting newbies to read it, as it clears a lot of lingering questions.

My question about epoxies changed a bit after reading the faq, as it says that \"superglue\" is generally out and epoxies in, but what temperature must it be able to withstand?

ello,

Fimo wise on the pack it should be 130 for 15 mins but I would drop that to 8-10 minutes.

If your going to get it cast then you need to either get the masters done in resin, or use a mouldmaker that has low temp silicone moulds in his/her arsenal.

superglue is fine for sticking sculpts just dont overdo it.

Moulding temperatures will vary depending on the compound of the mould: organic rubber is 150 degrees C (although you also have to take into acccount the pressure elament which ramps up the temp a bit)
Low temp silicone as the name sugests is a lot less with some being arround the 75 degrees C mark.

Hope that helps, plus Ming Hua should be around soon, being the recepticle of all sculpting knowledge that he is.

cheers
seth

If you sculpt using FIMO you\'ll most likely have to RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizer) to create a mold.

If you use RTV you don\'t have to worry about what glues you use as long as the glue is sealed (i.e. it does not have direct contact with the RTV.)

I\'ve used both metal gravity casting and resin gavity casting for my personal sculpts. The quality of the resin casts comes close to the original model. Metal does not come near that kind of quality.

However if a professional is casting both resin/metal(using the proper tools) the differnece diminishes and they both are comperable.
