40k novel suggestions

Wanting to read a good novel that will give me some background in the 40k universe. I don\'t now how good any of these series are but some of the authors I\'ve enjoyed from other sci-fi/fantasy books are

Anything by David Gemmell, The Forgotten Realms books by R.A. Salvatore, I liked the first several Shannara books long ago by Terry Brooks, David Eddings, especially the Belgariad series. Robert Jordan\'s Wheel of Time books, well, the first 3, then I couldn\'t go on any longer. I haven\'t read a lot of sci-fi except Arthur C Clarke, and Orson Scott Card (which I really enjoyed) and I remember really liking some BattleTech books I read in the late 90\'s that were about the Grey Death Legion and a series about the Jade Falcons but I don\'t recall the titles at the moment and I don\'t have the books any longer.

Not looking for anything super deep or earth shattering (unless they actually blow up the earth!). Just a page-turner filled with some good characters and the 40k battles that we like to see played out on the tabletops.

If you have any suggestions on books or series to start at, I\'d appreciate it!

Thanks!

Definitely a good series!
Also, if you like eldar, there is the \"Prophecy\"
and oodles of Space Marine books, both imperial and chaos.

C.S. Goto and Dan Abnett are great to read.

Eisenhorn is without a doubt my al time favourite (and the only serious i\'ve read three times)

Gaunt\'s ghost are a close second (having been read twice)

id say gaunts ghosts or the ultramarines books. i just finished reading courage and honour (new ultramarine book) they are all well worth a read. If you fancy something lighter then how could i not tell you to read the Ciaphas Cain series :D For the Emperor is the best break-in book i have read and sugested to ppl wanting to get into 40k

Ditto! Awesome series. Abnett be da man.
Sandy Mitchell\'s Ciaphas Cain novels are tremendous fun, but can get a bit tiresome read back-to-back. Still, a great new take on the Grimdark that\'s all over 40K...

Even though the Horus Heresy series is about the 30th millenium it is still pretty much in sync with the 40k universe, it is also a great series with some truly stunning books! Some of them are not that stunning though.

Eisenhorn is also a very good series. How can you not love Dan the man Abnetts work :D?
