Hi there guys, this is m first foray into trying to paint something 'seriously'! I really want to learn a lot of new techniques and after lurking here for a good few years decided i should use this awesome resource.
First off i pre-shaded the armour and tried to use black oils to get the recess' a little darker. As you can tell im leaning towards the military model way of painting with this one as i felt it would be more appropriate for the scale and this is what i want to learn at the moment.
The part im stuck on at the moment is what colours to use give the tonal variation to the blue using oils. I've used the technique on military models (the one where you put spots of various coloured oil all over the model and then liberally brush thinner all over) Not sure on the term used for this, sorry. On military models ive put on white, buff, green, blue and red but on blue smurf armour im stumped what to use to get an effective affect. Im guessing white and buff would be ok but any other colours i can throw in would be great help from the oil masters here.

Sorry for the pic it was iphoned and for my terrible description above, ive had no formal teaching and had to learn by mimicking what ive seen.
I want the armour to look used but well maintained so it wont be bashed to hell and will be dusted up with city dirt/brick dust type pigments at the end. i imagine hes been prepping for war for weeks and is finally surveying the battle field.
Many thanks, Joe.
