I´m painting a unit of dwarf crossbowmen. I want the standard bearer to carry a wooden banner pole but I´m tired of the uni-brown-colored poles that seem to be so common. How do I make wood grain texture on it? Could you link me to some tuts?

I have been painting for quite a while now but I want to go into a little sculpting. Are there any good online tutorials available? or some tips from the more experienced?

When I paint the paint normally comes out grainy and ugly. What can I do? I heard once that if I put a drop of washing liquid into the paint it comes out smoother. Is that correct? What do you do????
