I painted something like this a while back. I started with a base coat of black, then worked through multiple layers of red. Avoid any white, unless you really do want pink! Adding some orange to the mix will give you a really good firey effect, and makes the mini much brighter! Keep trying, it looks like you are well on your way!! (BTW, my 6 rating is because the pic is pretty blurry.)
Reds are hard. I think part of the reason your score isn't higher than it is is because he looks pink instead of red. Try higlighting with orange or orange-red instead of trying to use a lighter red (ie pink). Doesn't sound like it would work, but your results will be much redder that way.
