I have to agree with nir200 this is pretty much tabletop quality. The blue color seems like it was either drybrushed on or a single layer of paint was added over a black undercoating. I'd recomend using a white undercoat and drybrushing a lighter blue or even white on the edges of the armor. however drybrushing metalics over a black undercoat works great.

I tend to agree with a good first try and I have been one that it took some time to improve on my Dark Angels. It will take time to improve your ability, but only honesty will improve it. I have been painting for 10 years, off and on. People had been honest with me about my painting and no matter how brutal or nice their words were, I knew I had to improve. A bit of advice on the leather, though: I used scorched brown as the undercoat and painted the puches in bestial brown. I highlighted the edges with snakebite leather to give it a worn look of natural leather. I am still improving ways on this idea, but for now it seems to the job. I dabbed a little bit of Boltgun metal or chainmail on the button and left the strap with a leathery look.

This may not be a masterpiece, but it's definately a lot better then 'tabletop quality'. Nir200, you must be gaming with Rembrant, DaVinci, and Michaelangelo! I think many of the people on here have become jaded. We've all seen so many incredibly great models that when someone does merely a 'good' job we tend to look down on it. 70% of the people at my FLGS don't even bother painting their armies. About 50% just assemble and prime them, and the other 20% don't even bother priming. On guy doesn't even glue 'em together! He just sticks the torsos on bases. So you see, tabletop quality is all relative. In my area, as long as there is paint on them they're a 5! I'd say this is a 6.5, but I'm giving him a 7 'cause it's a helluva great first try!
