Famous Last Words - GD Gold Winner
The Duel category at the Golden Demons has always been one of my favorites, though before this piece I'd only managed to make the final cut in this category. The concept is two combatants and they must be on a base no more than 50mm x 50mm. Now, there have been some superb winners in the past - Jakob Neilsen and Joe Hill to name just a couple - but I wanted to make mine something a little different to just two guys slugging it out. I came up with the idea of a tank being attacked by an Ork Bommer! The only way I'd manage this on the prescribed base was to section a Leman Russ. I assembled the upper hull and turret and then transcribed a 50mm x 50mm plot on the top. Once I was happy with the placement I set about it with my trusty Razor Saw. The sides were then built up with plasticard and any gaps filled in with Milliput. The Commander and Ork were then modelled and all pieces undercoated black. After painting and assembling the vignette I thought I'd varnish the whole piece to tone down the ink washes. Big Mistake! The spray varnish turned the whole piece a dusty grey! Luckily I managed to salvage it by gloss varnishing (this had the effect of restoring the colours) and then applying more gloss layers to areas such as the periscopes. The result? A Gold at the years Golden Demons....
