Using a wash of thinned down chestnut ink on the robe would relieve some of the chalkiness and add depth to the color, then re-highlight over anything that gets too dark from the ink wash. Keep the paints thin.
I think you have a solid start. Two suggestions--I think this fella looks a bit chalky and his sword needs some highlighting. Thinning your paints some will help with that chalky look.
