I mixed the skin color, because at the time I didn't have anything that looked "right" to me. I had a lot of fun putting the grain on his 3-section-staff. The musculature was a real blast to paint.
I just finished prepping this guy for painting, and I was wondering if you'd carved in the woodgrain until I read your description. Great addition, and very well painted. The chest also looks good, and he's got a great fierce expression. I think it would look good if you did some inking or dark washing on the metal parts of his staff.
