Most of us who are of Pre-Internet Vintage are also self taught, and I see nothing 'wrong' in your work. I would suggest that increased contrast may be the next stage you should aspire to, using toned shadows and brighter highlights. Consider starting a Work In Progress thread in the forums and you will gain much advice and counsel.
I started painting by myself, without manuals or guidance from experienced pinters, so I lack completely of technique; any kind of advice will be extremely welcomed.
