The Base indeed is intentialy left like that. I have a whole army of such dwarfs to paint and I want to do all the bases at once. But it can take me some time to finish all the dwarfs first :)
Welcome to CMoN, friend. A nice mini, really like the face and the vibrant red. You would really need to put more definition into the beard, it looks a bit flat. And the base looks like it has not come beyound the basecoat. I like the red boots - proper "red period" oldschool feel.
