After putting it together, I used a black primer which dulled the fine details of the GW40k mini. With a chunky, blocky, result from the spray can, I then painted the Chaos Terminator Lord to look like what was on the box.

The white does look like the paint was to thick when applied. You'll get a much smoother layer if you water down the paint and do a few coats.

the primer should only be a very very thin layer. you also should thin your paint a bit with water and you should use a much fewer amount of paint on the brush when you are painting, the result will be much better and much more pleasing to the eye. it also seems that you are using a too big brush.
