By accident, to some extent. :) I used a white base-coat and covered it in chestnut ink, which in spite of soap liquid failed to stay in the recesses. The armour was then painted with a dark flesh tone, leaving out the recesses. I then higlighted it broadly in a light beige and sparingly in white. Highlights were painted, not drybrushed.
I thought painting all the bumps on the armour as gems would give the fig too much of a showy appearance, that's why I chose to integrate them into the armour colour.
Your're right on the sword, it came out a lot less smooth than I 'd hoped it would. Working on it... :o)
