Just a quick experiment with the stone effect not really marble but more malachite like. It was achieved with two pieces of sponge with different textures. On a black undercoat black and white paint were dabbed on with the sponges. Two glazes of green ink and gloss varnish were finally applied.

I agree that stone is very impressive, the miniature itself i think could do with further highlights, and the base is abit plain (the rocks) maybe if you varied the size of the stones next time?
