LOTR: Mounted Gamling with Royal Banner

My second Rider of Rohan, the hero Gamling, mounted and carrying the Royal Banner of Rohan. I paint this for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers NATIONAL PAINTING COMPETITION Canada (April 2003). He managed to place 1st Nationally. This was about 25+ hours of work, probably over half that spent on the horse alone. I can’t count the number of layers of thinned paint that went into him. I particularly like how the armour turned out. The red is layer from black to bright red to give it a lacquered appearance. The scale mail was done in four distinct shades of metallics up to mithril silver, giving it a fish scale like scintillation. The gold metallics are likewise blended, but in six stages up to a little edging with mithril silver. The banner was extremely tough to do, with its deep waves, and I actually did a different image on the other side, which I will post later. I didn’t take these images. These pictures are a composite of images from the Games Workshop website and can seen there at http://www.games-workshop.com/news/cn/events/lotr_painting/home.htm The pictures should also be appearing in an upcoming White Dwarf. Very Cool. :) Cheers, Darkblade [AAvH-Darkblade]

Fine mini. But the lines on the banner are too hard, the metalics needs more lineout(the gold and silver floats together).
