Thanks for the feedback Thelonius! That has definitely been my no. 1 piece of advice from most people, definitely need to up the contrast in my shading.
I like your color choices. But an improvement might be to add more layers of color i.e. shading. The way I started was to begin with a base layer (the color you want), then add a dark wash color over that; the base color with a very dark brown added (like 2x or 3x dark to base). When that's dry, dry-brush the same base color on top of that. Your precision is right on. Have fun.
