Jeaunoir

I started this mini with one thing in mind and that was to work on blending and highlighting of cloth. As a practice miniature I think he came out pretty well. I am still working on setting up a better place to photo my miniatures, so I apologize about the pic. I also should have taken the photo before I dullcoated him, but c'est la vie. Comments are greatly appreciated as I am still learning. Thank you!

I suspect that you have bought out everything this mini has to offer. I really find it hard to find fault other than the fact that it is a totally uninspiring sculpt to begin with IMO. I don't think there is a painter alive who could turn this into a 9-10. I also suspect they wouldn't want to try. That's not to detract from your painting however!

First, thank you very much to everyone for their input, it will only help make me a better painter ( I hope ;) ) Next, just some clarifications: The mini was primed in white and when I got to his mantle, I was unsure what color to use. I wanted to keep it dark and unassuming so I tried scab red with some black. Blech. Too dark. So I thought I would highlight it up from scab with no black through gore red to blood red. I think I got too timid and left too much of the shadow in the mantle. The gloss however comes from my n00by overspray of the matte varnish :( The "book" is actually a small satchel. I decided to paint it grey and it is hard to tell in that picture. Again, thanks for the comments, especially Temperance who is ever vigilant and constructive with his perspective.

I like your choice of colors. The way you have painted the fabric makes it look like leather, which I like. The cloak looks like ti could be suede or velvet. Great color. What I don't like is the red sash. It looks like you washed it? The recesses are too dark and glossy. It's not "soft" like the rest of the model. Also, the book on his hip looks like you just for got to paint it. You put so much work in the rest of the detail, I wonder why you left the pages grey?
