He is unfinished, but I wanted feedback about his scales.

I didn't know the model was unfinished. Well, except for the teeth and nails. The scales look good so far. Highlighting scales is difficult. If you look at a fish the scales catch light differently. What you might try is making some random scales a slightly different hue, like they are catching light. Perhaps some light greens or blue-greens. Looking good so far.

First, the back view -- I like the red and white coloring. Some of the areas inbetween the red and white scales look like you accidentally got some paint in between -- you might want to darken those spots. You might be able to get a slightly more 3D appearance by having a slightly darker red spot at the top of the scale and a slightly lighter red (perhaps orange, as you want to avoid pink) at the lower part. You want the transition between colors to be really subtle, so it should be rather thin coats. You could do similar things to the green scales as well. I think you could risk trying brighter highlights -- the most important thing is to do a little bit of color change at a time so you don't end up with obvious lines.
