Genestealer Broodlord, 3rd ed. SH
The Broodlord from the 2009 SH set, and with its fellow genestealers my first minis in 5+ years. Had a blast with these guys, and painted them to the best of my ability at the moment. I will need to work on my light set-up, the mini's have satin Vallejo finish on the carapace and are a bit shiny in the pics, however in real life the shine is much more subdued. Since they will actually be used to play the game whenever I finish the termies,I figured that better to give them a thicker varnish than risk rubbing off all that work lol! I went for the classic blue/purple scheme, with a few embelishments, such as the skin mottling and the pointillist approach to the carapace. I wanted to add a subtle hint of an insect like texture up close without interfering too much with the blending underneath. Despite the cartoony classic colors, I have tried to paint them a bit more realistically, and spent a good deal of time on the bases. The sculpts are excellent, but the Broodlord and some of the Terminators suffer from strange extruded casting, to compensate for this I faked depth wherever possible, especially on the skulls and 2 of the hands. Bugs the hell out of me when I see the pics of the Studio version that have painted the casting issues and made skulls that are 3 feet deep and transition straight into vents and pipes with no break. I hope the pics are good enough to look appealing anyhow! Comments and criticism welcome. Thanks!
