Yes, it's a good idea. It think the face has also the chance to get a contrast, too. It's a little doll-faced, and if it is your intention, then well done. On the other side, the plates get a rich contrast by a light-source from the top-left. So you can for the skin-tone. I like it, it is refreshing. Have fun painting and experimenting!
Nice! and a nice idea too. Can't help feeling you need to give the edge of the cracked china effect a more 3D feel - maybe just a thin white-line edge would bring it forward a bit (just an idea)
