SkyDancer make many very good points. I can't stress enough to highlight, highlight, and when you think your done... Highlight again (I suffer from this same affliction). Like you have just recently returned, and my time is very limited. I have spent much time at the library looking at images that are similar to what to the mini I want to paint to give me ideas, and color theary is our friend. Fortunatley the kids like the lib also ;)
It's a good beginning. When I started painting again after a more than 20 year absence, I read and read and then read some more---painting tips, reviews, basic info---and I looked at a lot of miniatures before I picked up a paintbrush or ordered my first bottle of paint. You might want to do the same. You've got the basic painting down, but there looks to be no shading attempt at all; it could be the picture, but it also could be the very dark color selection you've chosen that obscures highlights. Really make them stand out by doing more dramatic highlighting. Don't be afraid to highlight up to colors you think are too bright, since when you spray it with a dull coat, the dull coat tends to soften those highlights anyway. The bases are pretty good. The metallic parts appear to have been washed using dark inks, and there appears to be some highlighting. Try to make the sharp edges stand out more. Imagine the light shining on them---where does the light reflect. Don't depend on natural light, since it won't work on subjects so small. You have to artificially highlight.
