Rictur Diehn

This is my third mini and my first after a year long hiatus. The goal of this mini was to test my ability to paint after the break and to try gem painting, some highlighting and blending, thinner paints and face painting. I am not really happy with the way the face came out but quite satisfied with the gem. The highlighting I would like some critique on as I dunno if it is too subtle. My next mini I plan to try some NNM, more advanced blending and hopefully a better face. Please leave comments when you vote as they will help me develop. Ascension

wow its been a long time since I've seen some of your work and I would agree that the highlights are too subtle. Nice to see some work from you though!

I think the highlighting is too subtle, go for much more contrast. Also it looks to me as if you didn't thin your paints enough. However, bearing in mind that this is your third mini I think you did a very good and most importantly clean paint job.

Highlights are the equivalent of chicken soup and bedrest for a sick person. There is no such thing as too much! Your piece would have a lot more depth with deeper, more complicated highlights, especially on the maroon-ish looking leather areas (gloves, tops of boots, etc.) Your best blending job was on the cape, which was nice. Also, don't be afraid to highlight metallics. It looks like you used one shade for the sword hilt, pommel, and blade. GW "mithril silver" on GW "chainmail" on possibly even GW "boltgun metal" is a very easy and rewarding metallic highlight. You don't even have to take it to the 3rd step, whatever satisfies you. You already have a great foundation of basic painting skills, just push on to more advanced highlighting and you'll see great improvement. Overall, pretty good!
